Diversity of Hyacinth Bean (lablab Purpureus L. Sweet) at the Homesteads of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Forty-one hyacinth bean genotypes were collected from the homesteads of three agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh to study their diversity. The collections were found widely diverse. Multivariate techniques grouped the genotypes into seven clusters, which were not correlated with the agro-ecological diversity. Cluster III and IV included the genotypes of high pod yield with large size. Inter cluster distances ranged from 4.54 between cluster V and VI to 18.33 between clusters III and VII. Based on intra cluster distances genotypes of cluster I were more heterogeneous and genotypes of cluster I were more homogeneous. The genotype B308 contributed most while genotype BI09 contributed least to the diversity and no regional influence existed on the genotypes in relation to their contribution towards diversity. Seed length contributed 31.28% of the total diversity. Considering diversity pattern and other agronomic character inter genotype crosses of B104, B204, and B211 with B309 and B310 in all possible combinations are suggested for future improvement program.

Objectives:

To study the genetic diversity of hyacinth bean genotypes present at the homesteads of three agro- ecologically-different regions of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Forty-one genotypes of hyacinth bean were recorded from the homesteads of Banderban, Gazipur and Naogaon representing three agro- ecologically different regions like Hill tract, Plain land and Barindtract, respectively. Data on 16 quantitative traits were collected during February to March 1999. The traits were internode length, petiole length, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, inflorescence length, pod length, pod width, pod thickness, pod weight, seed/pod, seed length, seed width, seed thickness, seed weight and pod yield. Data were collected from three plants of each genotype at the homestead where plants were grown. Internode length, inflorescence length and pod yield were measured in the field condition. Ten leaves and ten mature pods from each vine produced rest of the data. Mean data of each character over three locations were subjected to multivariate analysis using GENSTAT 513 and SPSS computer software.

Achievement/Findings:

Wide range of genetic diversity exists among the hyacinth bean genotypes found In the homesteads of Bangladesh which is independent of geographical influence. Seed length is the prime contributing character to the genetic diversity of hyacinth bean. Inter genotypic crosses of B104, B204, and B211 with B309 and B310 in all possible combination might give improved variety of hyacinth bean.
