An experiment on comparison of physic-chemical features, phytoplankton and zooplankton and fish production between periphyton based and control monoculture system of cirrhinus reba was conducted for a period of 120 days in six earthen ponds. In Treatment1 bamboo poles were used as artificial substrate for periphyton growth and in Treatment2 (control) there was no artificial substrate. Each of the 6 ponds was limed and fertilized then 60 fingerlings were stocked (average size: 10.73 cm and weight: 18 g). The physico-chemical features of two treatments water bodies showed no significant differences. A total 37 genera of phytoplankton comprised of four different groups, 13 genera of zooplankton and constitute of two different groups as well as 32 genera belonged to four different groups (Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae) formed as periphyton on bamboo poles substrate were recorded. The phytoplankton abundance showed highly significant differences (P<0.01) between T1 and T2 as well the zooplankton differed (P<0.05) significantly of those treatments. The production of fish goes to nearer of significant (P<0.10) different between T1 and T2 . The study reveal that Production of fish always higher in T1 then T2 . So, it can be state that periphyton grown on bamboo pole and increase phytoplankton and zooplankton in T1. In the point of view, in aquaculture system of T1 (periphyton based), fish can consume more phytoplankton, zooplankton as well as periphyton from their favourable aquatic environments; thus they were bodily gain and increase production in T1. However, it is revealed from the experiment that periphyton based aquaculture provide increased production of phytoplankton, zooplankton as well as fish and low cost technology which can help improved and sustainable aquaculture of Bangladesh. Further long term study needed to explore more knowledge and improved technology of periphyton based aquaculture system.

To assess the physico-chemical features, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish production between periphyton based and control monoculture system by using C. reba.

The experiment was carried out for the period of 4 months from 08 June, 2012 to 05 October, 2012 in six earthen ponds at the Riverine station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Chandpur, Bangladesh. The ponds were rectangular in shape having surface area of each of the pond was about 1 decimal (40 m2) with an average water depth one meter. All the ponds were completely independent and with facility of supplying ground water. The ponds were not interconnected and had no inlets or outlets. The experiment was performed in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and the ponds were divided into two treatment groups of three replicates and arbitrarily numbered as ponds 1 to 6 for the purposes of the present study. The aquatic vegetations of the embankments were cleaned manually. All kinds of undesirable fishes were removed by rotenone treatment. Quicklime (CaO) was applied in all the ponds at the rate of 1.0 kg/decimal as initial dose before seven days of fertilization. Water quality parameters including temperature, water depth, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, free carbondioxide, total alkalinity, Phosphate-phosphorous (PO4) and Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO3-N) of the ponds were monitored fortnightly between 09.00 and 11.00 hours on each sampling day throughout the study period. Quantitative and qualitative samples of phytoplankton and zooplankton were taken fortnightly. A 10-L sample of pond water, comprising from different sites in each pond at mid-depth and surface, was passed through a plankton net (mesh size 55 mm) and finally concentrated 50 ml. the concentrated samples were preserved in small, sealed plastic bottles containing 5% buffered formalin for further analysis. Periphyton samples were collected from bamboo poles by scarping one square inch area with the help of a razor blade. Scraping samples were taken in 50 ml water and vigorous shaking was done. The samples was kept in vials and preserved in 5% formalin for further analysis. Periphyton density was estimated by using a (S-R cell) and a binocular microscope. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS, a computer based program for Windows (Version 11.5, 2007. Systat, Inc. USA).

The study revealed that the phytoplankton comprised of 37 genera belonging to four different groups of Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Uglenophyceae. The zooplankton constitute of 13 genera belonging to two different groups of Crustacea and Rotifera. Periphyton grown on bamboo pole and increase phytoplankton and zooplankton. In aquaculture system fish can consume more phytoplankton, zooplankton as well as periphyton from their favourable aquatic environments; they were bodily gain and increase production.
