Determination of Strength Parameters of Ryton Sand from Shear Box Test

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This work was performed in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Science, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K. The main objective of this work was to determine the shear strength parameters c and Ø of Ryton sand soil from shear box test. These values were determined at different moisture contents and dry densities. A considerable variation was observed in these values at various soil conditions. These information are necessary for selecting the soil condition at which cultivation cost will be minimum.

Objectives:

To study the effects of dry density on its parameters .
To study the effects of moisture content on its parameters.

Methodology:

Ryton sand is a reasonably well graded sandy loam with low clay content. The main particle size classification of this soil are sand 94.23%, silt 4.21% and clay 1.56%. The liquid limit of this soil as determined according to B.S. 1377 (1975) is 0.30. Distilled water was added to oven dried soil. The moisture levels were selected to provide a reasonable number of observations. Tests were also performed at different densities at a particular moisture content. Average moisture content of a sample was determined by the oven dry method by laking a few different small samples. These conditions are achieved by placing the soil in a rigid metal box, square fn plan. consisting of two halves. The lower half of the box can slide relative to the upper half when pushed or pulled by a motorised drive unit while a yoke supporting a load hanger provides the normal pressure. For a particular test four samples were prepared maintaining equal and uniform density. Soils were placed into lhe box in three different layers approximately 30%. 40% and 30% of the total volume In the bottom. middle and top layer, respectively. The normal stress was obtained by dividing the normal load with cross-sectional area of the shear box to obtain the shear stress. To determine the values of the Mohr- Coulamb parameters for a particular soil condition. normal stress vs shear stress points were denoted by using a computer. A computer programme was made for this purpose. The best fit line was drawn by hand. The angle made by this line with the abscissa was the soil Internal friction angle 0 and the intercept of this line with the ordinate was the cohesion c.

Achievement/Findings:

From this study the strength of Rylon sand varies at different moisture contents and dry densities. The information of strength parameters can be used for selecting the soil condition for cultivation. It can be said that the cultivation cost of sandy soil will be minimum at very low and also at very high moisture contents.The values of C and 0 obtained can be used to design and development of earth working machines and structures for this type of soil. A considerable variation was observed in these values at various soil conditions. These information are necessary for selecting the soil condition at which cultivation cost will be minimum.
