Development of Fodder Production Technology in the Existing Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in the Dairy Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to explore the feasibility of growing fodder crop within a main crop without affecting the yield of the main crop. The study showed that maize may be grown as a fodder in aus rice at 75cm x 50cm spacing; in jute at 100cm x 75cm spacing; in wheat at 75cm x 50cm spacing; in mustard at 75cm x 25cm spacing; and in lentil at 50cm x 50cm spacing. The study also indicated that sorghurn may be grown in aus rice at 90cm x 30cm spacing and in jute at 75cm x 100cm spacing. In transplant aman rice, grasspea (as main crop) and maize (as fodder crop) may be grown as relay crop and maize should be planted about one month before harvest of the aman rice at a spacing of 40cm in between 3rd and 4th rows of aman rice planted at 30cm x 5cm spacing. Based on the results of the study promising fodder oriented cropping system models have been proposed.

Objectives:

To see the possibility of growing fodder as intercrops in the main crops and secondarily to select high yielding biomass fodder species.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the Dairy Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April 1989 to April 1990. The study involved eleven experiment. In all the experiments, the crops were planted after thorough land preparation with disc plough, harrow, country plough, and ladder. The fertilizers were applied as par recommended rate for each crop. Harvesting, threshing, cleaning and processing of the crops were done following usual practice. Data were collected for yield and yield contributing characters of the main crops (aus rice, jute, T. arnan, grasspea, wheat, lentil, and mustard) and the fodder crops (maize, sorghum and cowpea). The biomass yield of the fodder crops and the grain and straw/fibre and stick yields of the main crops were statistically analysed and the significance of mean differences was adjudged by Least Significance Difference (LSD).
