Survey on Cultivation Area of Different Variety of Tossa and Deshi Jute in Different Jute Growing Regions.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey work was conducted in different location of Rangpur region to find out the acreage of deshi and tossa jute jute cultivation and also recorded the acreage of BJRI variety and Indian variety. A questionnaire was developed and a total of hundreds farmers were selected for interview. The survey report showed that on an average 94% and 6% area of jute covered by tossa and deshi jute respectively. The result also revealed that the acreage of 94% tossa jute, 91% area covered by Indian jute and only 10% area cultivated by BJRI variety.

Objectives:

To assess the acreage of different variety of tossa jute.

Methodology:

A survey work was conducted in different location of Rangpur (Rangpur sadar, Mithapukur, Pirgacha and Kawnia) and Kurigram district (Kurigram sadar) to find out the acreage of deshi and tossa jute cultivation and also investigate the acreage of BJRI variety and Indian variety. A questionnaire was developed and a total of hundreds farmers were selected for interview. Survey was conducted in those area where is being grown intensively. A total of 100 farmers will be selected at random taking 20 farmers from 5 study locations. Data collection was conducted with a pre-tested questionnaire. Simple descriptive statistics was followed in analyzing the data. The study was conducted in collaboration with the two NGO.

Achievement/Findings:

The survey result showed 94% area covered by tossa jute and only 6% area cultivated by deshi jute in Rangpur and Kurigram district. The area of tossa jute have been increasing due to early variety of tossa jute was developed which replaced the deshi jute (C. capsularis). The survey result also revealed that 9.0% area covered by BJRI tossa jute and rest of 91.0% area covered by Indian tossa. It might be due to the easy available of seed of Indian variety at farmer’s level during sowing period.
