Genotypical Evaluation of Major Pests on Lentil and Lablab Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Aphid and thrips were the major pests infested three categories of lentil in the field of which majority of the genotypes of early maturity category were more susceptible. The plants of large seeded genotypes recorded half the population of these pests infesting early maturity genotypes and appeared less susceptible. The degrees of susceptibility of the individual genotypes remained the same as in last year. Bean plants suffered more from foliage feeding and pod borer pests under early plantation in June compared to late planting in September. The abundance of aphid, thrips and mites recorded lower on bean genotypes this year than last year and reactions of these pests varied on genotypes. The damage of bean pods by borer increased as much as 75% compared to 60% in previous year and again vast majority of the genotypes were found highly susceptible to this pest.

Objectives:

To evaluate the pest reactions to various indigenous and exotic genotypes of lentil and lablab bean in the field, developing tolerant lines.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted on the pests abundance and their other aspects on several genotypes of lentil and lablab bean during 1989-90. The investigations were carried out on the population levels of pests which attacked three categories of lentil plants such as early maturity, high yielding and large seeded in the experimental plots of Genetic and Plant Breeding component of the project. Twenty one genotypes of each of the three categories of lentil except large seeded were examined fat pests in three separate plots. There were four replicates per genotype. Lentil seeds were sown on 28th November, 1989 and observations on pest incidence at weekly intervals were made 47 days after sowing. This experiment was the reparation of the experiment done in the previous two years. The studies were made following the methods of the previous year (lewis, 1973; Anon. 1989). The population data were analysed using CRD and DNMRT. The pest abundance and damage assessment of three promising genotypes of bean were studied in an experiment of different times of planting viz. 1st week of June, 3rd week of July and 1st week of September, 1989, giving one and a half months interval between the planting time. Each genotype was planted in five replicates. The population level of the foliage feeding pests and percentage of damage to bean pod by borer were obtained and the data were analysed following CRD and DNMRT for three genotypes separately.
