Influence of Plow Pan on Soil Physical Properties and the Yield of Rice and Maize.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments using rice and maize were carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farmland during arnan, boro and rabi seasons of 1989 and 1990. The rice crops BR11 and pajm were used in the aman season of 1989. During boro and rabi season of 1990, BR2 rice and maize (Barnali) were cultivated in the experimental field. The bulk density values were higher due to tilling by country plough over power tiller except in the experiment with BR11 rice. Soil bulk density significantly increased with the increase of depth in all trials. Except the root density of BR2, the power tiller treatment produced higher root density in this study. The root density drastically reduced downward and significantly decreased from top level. Infiltration rate was the highest in the country plough treatment both under rice and maize studies. There were no significant differences in the yield of rice grain and straw between the tillage operations done by power tiller and country plough. Tilling soil by country plough significantly increased the maize grain yield and ear length over by power tiller. Fodder yield did not differ between the tillage treatments.

Objectives:

(1) to study the effect of plough pan on root growth, (2) to study soil resistance from the experimental plots under different types of tillage, (3) to observe the changes in the status of bulk density and infiltration rates due to tillage operations and finally (4) to see the effect of plough pan on straw, grain, ear length and fodder yield.

Methodology:

Experiments using rice and maize were carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farmland during, aman, boro and rabi seasons of 1989 and 1990. The rice crops BR-11 and pajam were used in the aman season of 1989. During boro and rabi seasons of 1990, BR-2 rice and maize (Barnali) were cultivated in the experimental field. The texture of the soil was silty loam. The particle density ranged from 2.21 to 2.51 gm/cm³. Randomized block design was followed in the experiment with five replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m keeping 1 m block to block distance. Two tillage treatments such as (1) conventional tillage (six times ploughing by country plow) and (2) tillage by power tiller (five times ploughing} where applied in the study. Triple super- phosphate and muriate of potash were applied @ 60 and 40 kg/ha as P₂O₅;. and K₂0, respectively during land preparation. Urea was added @ 80 kgN/ha in three splits such as one third during land preparation and the rest two third in two equal splits (at maximum tillering and before panicle initiation stage). Aman and boro rice were planted on August 2 and February 3, 1989 and 1990, respectively. In the rice experiment, row to row and plant to plant distances were 25 cm and 20 cm, respectively. But in the maize plot, plant to plant and tins to line distances were maintained at 25 and 75 cm. Three maize seeds were sown on December 17, 1989 by hand. After germination of seeds only one healthy plant was allowed to grow. Weeding, irrigation and insecticide applications ware done whenever necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Tillage by power tiller decreased bulk density and soil resistance, which resulted in increased root mass density, grain and straw yields of rice and fodder yield of maize. The higher grain yield and length of ear of maize were obtained with the country plough treatment.
