Realized Heritability and Genetic Gains in Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A base population with 8 F₂crosses was used to develop 4 subpopulation and were advanced up to F₅generation. Realized genetic gain was pronounced in Sp I for pods per plant and in Sp 3 for seed weight. which also increased in advancing generation. Realized heritability with higher values was associated with seeds per pod and seed weight seemed to be effective and can greatly increase seed yield through indirect selection.

Objectives:

The present study has been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of selection for seed yield and its components in terms of realized gain and heritability in lentil.

Methodology:

Eight F₂ bulks formed the base population for exercising selection for yield and yield components in the subsequent generations. Five sub-populations (SP 1 to SP 5) were made out of the base population so that each sub-population contained equal number of plants from each cross. Five sub-populations were then advanced up to F₅ generation by exercising 10% selection intensity in each generation for pods per plant in Sp 1 seeds per pod in SP 2. seed weight in Sp 3, seed yield in Sp 4 and random selection in Sp 5. during 1988-89 to 1990-91 at RARS. lshurdi. The observations on seed yield and its components were recorded in the respective sub-populations. The realized response to selection for seed yield and its components was computed on the basis of the differences of means of' sub-populations advanced by different selection methods from those of the random sub-population. The realized heritability for different characters was worked out as the ratio of difference in means of sub-population advanced by different selection methods from those of random population to the selection differential in F₂ generation (base population).

Achievement/Findings:

This clearly indicates that selection for pods per plant and seed weight might he effective. However, as pods per plant shows low realized heritability estimates. this character can not he relied upon for yield improvement. The significant point that emerges from this study is that directly realized gain was highest for seed weight and low for seed yield. These two characters again showed the same trend when realized heritability was studied. This indicates that seed weight is more stable and highly heritable character as compared to seed yield and direct selection for seed weight would he effective. Since seed weight is highly correlated with seed yield and easy to select it implies that seed yield can he increased by indirect selection via seed weight.
