An investigation was carried out on white cements for its different strength properties such as setting times and strength for different proportions of aggregates and curing periods. Similar test were performed on gray cement to compare the results. Three different colour of mosaic stones such as white, black and gray were used as coarse aggregate in this investigation. White and gray portland cement was collected from the local market. In this purpose fineness of white cement was determined using 200 No. Sieve and the initial and final setting time of both the cement were determined. Concrete cylinders of size 3"x6" were fabricated for three different proportions 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2. Mortar cubes of size 2.78" and Briquette at different proportion were also made. Compressive strength of cylinders was tested for 7, 14, and 28 days of curing periods. Compressive strength and tensile strength of mortar cubes and Briquette were also determined at 3 days of curing period. The test results revealed that maximum strength of cylinders was obtained for proportions 1:1 and strengths increased with curing period. It was also found that strength properties of white cement are almost two-third to that of the ordinary portland cement.

  Performance evaluation
  1. To study the strength properties of white cement available in the market.
  2. To determine the curing effect of white cement as well as ordinary portland cement.
  3. To determine the effect of proportion of white cement in concrete of mosaic stone.
  4. To compare the strength properties of white cement to those of portland cement.

A factorial experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the period from January to June 2008. The manufacture of cement requires stringent control and a number of tests were performed in the laboratory to ensure that the cement is of the desired quality and that it conforms to the requirement of the relevant standards. The tests were Initial setting time, Final setting time, Tensile strength and Compressive strength. To investigate the tensile strength the briquettes moulded in a specific manner cured for 24 hours at a temperature between 64° to 68°F in an atmosphere of at least 90% R. H. (relative humidity). The briquettes were remoulded after 3 days and tested in direct tension. The pull being applied though special jaws engage the wide ends of the briquettes. Compressive strength is an important characteristic of concrete. For a given set, of materials and conditions concrete strength was determined by the quantity of water used per unit quantity of cement. The standard cylinder specimen of concrete was 3 inch in diameter and 6 inch high and was cast in a mould generally made of PVC pipe. Cylindrical specimens were made and compacted either in three layers using a 5/8 inch diameter steel rod. The standard cylinders were tested at prescribed ages, of 7 days, 14 days and 28 days of curing. The compressive strength of concrete cylinder was tested by the Universal Compression testing Machine. Using the following formula the compressive strength was obtained. Compressive strength, S =P/A, where P = Load for which the cylinder failed (lb), A = Cross-sectional area (in2), S = Compressive strength(psi).

  1. The initial setting time of white cement was found 45 minutes and the final setting time was 14.31 minutes. These times are much lower than those of ordinary portland cement. So casting of concrete with white cement is to be done as quickly as possible;
  2. The tensile and the compressive strength of white cement concrete are almost 2/3rd of the gray cement concrete. thus this concrete can be used in low load bearing concrete structures;
  3. The strength of white cement concrete increases with higher proportion of cement and was found maximum at proportion 1:1;
  4. The strength of white cement concrete increases with curing period and was found maximum 3680 psi for 28 days curing;
  5. It can be used in Reinforced concrete structure also which is exposed and gives a esthetic views.
