Genetic Variability and Path Analysis in Cucumber (cucumis Satlvus L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Study on the variability. genetic parameters. character associations and path coefficients between yield and nine important characters of fourteen cucumber genotypes were conducted. to determine the critical traits that contribute yield. The genotypes exhibited a wide range of variability for all the characters studied. The characters were also found to be highly heritable. High GAPM was observed for yield followed by the number of fruits per plant and weight of individual fruit. Fruit yield had high positive r_p and r_gwith average fruit weight. number of fruits per plant. days to female flower anthesis and vine length, weight of individual fruit. number of fruits per plant. node order of female flower. fruit girth and days to male flower anthesis. Number of fruits per plant and weight of individual fruit directly contribute to the yield of cucumber. The results indicate that for increasing yield. selection should be based on plants bearing more fruits of larger size and weight.

Objectives:

A study was, therefore, conducted on the variability, genetic parameters, character associations and path coefficients between yield and nine important characters of cucumber.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Gazipur during February - May, 1988. The experiment was laid out with fourteen cucumber genotypes in a RCBD with three replications, following a spacing of 1.5 x 1.5 m. Unit plot size was 4 x 4 rn '. Seeds were sown directly in pits. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. Data on vine length(cm) after 30 days of sowing. days to male and female flower anthesis, node order of male and female flowers, fruit weight(g) and number, fruit length(cm) and girth(cm) were recorded and analyzed statistically. Yield (t/ha) was calculated from plot yield. Genotypic (S²_g) and phenotypic (S²_p) variance were calculated. Broad sense heritability (h²_b) and genetic advance in percentage of mean (GAPM) were estimated by using the formula given by Hanson et al. 1965). Genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variations (GCV and PCV) were worked out following the formula given by Burton (1952). Phenotypic (r_p') and genotypic (r_g₎ correlation coefficients were done using the formula suggested by AI-Jibouri et al. ( 1958). The path coefficients were calculated as per the formula given by Dewey and Lu (1959).

It may thus he concluded from the results that number of fruits per plant and weight of individual fruit had high GCV, h²_b and GAPM and well as high positive direct effects on yield. Therefore, maximum weightage should be given to these characters for the improvement of yield in cucumber
