Genetic Divergence for Yield and Its Components in Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence among 30 rice genotypes was measured by Mahalanobis D²' statistic based on plant height. effective tiller per plant. panicle length,fertile spikelets per panicle. total spikelets per panicle. 1000-grain weight. days to 50% flowering. days to maturity and grain yield per plant. The genotypes were grouped into 12 different clusters. No parallel relationship between genetic and geographical divergence was observed. or the nine different characters only five viz. days to 50% flowering, days to maturity. plant height. effective tiller per plant and 1000-grain weight contributed as much as 93% of the total divergence.

Objectives:

Therefore, the present investigation was aimed at ascertaining the nature and magnitude or genetic diversity among a set or rice varieties using D² analysis.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with thirty rice genotypes during the Aus season of 1991 using randomized complete block design with three replications. Twenty-one day old seedlings were transplanted in 5 m x 8 rows (10m²') plot with a spacing or 25 cm and 15 cm between and within rows, respectively. Fertilizer application and other cultural operations were done as per BRRI recommendation. Data were recorded on random samples or twenty plants (excluding border plants) from each plot for plant height (cm). effective tiller per plant. days to 50% flowering. days to maturity, panicle length (cm), fertile spikelets per panicle. total spikelets per panicle, 1000-grain weight (g), and grain yield per plant (g). Genetic divergence was studied following Mahalanobis generalized distance (D²) technique as extended by Ran (1952). Tocher's method (Rao. 1952) was followed tor determining the group constellations. Intra and inter-cluster distance cluster means and contribution or each character to the total divergence were estimated as suggested by Singh and Chaudhury (1985).

Achievement/Findings:

Grouping of these 30 rice genotypes into twelve clusters indicated the presence or large amount of diversity within these genotypes. The results also indicated that careful selection or parents from these 30 genotypes having optimum genetic divergence might be desirable to produce heterotic progeny. Days to flowering. days to maturity. plant height. effective tiller per plant. and 1000-grain weight. the predominant contributors to total divergence and the important yield contributing attributes might he useful for hybridization and improvement or rice yield.
