Nitrogen Fertilizer Management for Higher Efficiency in Wetland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A long-term field experiment using prilled urea (PU), urea surpergranules (USG) and rice straw (RS) was initiated on a permanent layout in the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRR!) farm, Joydebpur in the transplant aman (t.aman, wet season) 1984 to evaluate the efficiencies of these N fertilizers in .wetland rice. The experiment was continued for 4 years until boro (dry season) 1988. The cropping pattern was at aman-boro-fallow pottern with HYV rices, BR11 and BR3, in t.aman and boro, respectively. Nine treatments with PU, USG and RS along with one untreated N control were used. Urea supergrarule out yielded PU in the boro season, but showed no particular advantage over PU in T.amon. Rice straw appeared to be an effective partial substitute to chemical N fertilizer in T.aman but was inef'fective in boro. Total N uptake, apparent N recovery and agronomic efficiency of fertilizer were higher with USG than with PU. In economic terms, too, USG proved to be superior to PU, as both benefit cost ratio and marginal benefit cost ratio were higher in case of the former than of the latter.

Objectives:

The performances of ordinary prilled urea, urea supergranule and rice straw as sources of N for wetland rice and evaluated their comparative efficiencies in a four-year field experiment.

Methodology:

Eight field trials during the period 1984-1988 were conducted at the expmental farm of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur (clay loam Aeric Haplaquept). The soil was near neutral (pH 6.8 ) with the following properties; organic matter 1.57%. to NO.13%, incubated NH⁺₄ (at 28°C for two weeks) 40 mg/kg, Olsen P 10 mg kg. exchangeable K 0.3 cmol/kg. The trials were conducted on a permanent field layout. There were nine fertilizer treatments: control, 58 kg N and 87 kg N/ha as prilled urea (58 PU and 87 PU ). 58 kg N/ha and 87 kg N/ha as urea supergranule ( 58 USG and 87 USG), 29 kg N as PU plus 29 kg N/ha as rice straw (29 PU + RS), 58 PU+ RS, 29 SUG+RS and 58 USG +RS. The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The test rice varieties were BR3 in boro and BR11 in transplant aman.
