Genetic Diversity in Upland Cotton (g. Hirsutum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic diversity of 18 upland cotton genotypes were studied to select parents for hybridization following Principal Component Analysis, Non-hierarchical Clustering and Canonical Vector Analysis. There were three clusters among the genotypes. Cluster-I consisted of II genotypes. viz. Tx-CABCS. Yougoslav Early, Lecocas-4-1-83, Hurdts-100, B-6-2037, UPA (57)17, 356-181. C-1412. Coker-31O. Coker-100 staple and BDL.SA/92. Cluster-II contained 3 genotypes, BDL..BS(91) I, BDL.BS(91)2 and 91-16-4, Cluster-Ill composed of four genotypes, namely, EWLS x TW. S-71803985, S-71803785 and DL-16. Cluster-Ill produced the highest seed cotton yield per plant and the lowest ginning outtem. Cluster-II produced the highest ginning outtem and the lowest seed cotton yield per plant. The longest cluster distance was observed between Cluster-II and Cluster-III. Among the genotypes, B61 -2037 and C-1412 from Cluster-II; 91-16-4 representing Cluster-I and S-71803985 of Cluster-III may be selected for hybridization

Objectives:

Therefore, present experiment was undertaken to observe the genetic diversity of some upland cotton genotypes considering quantitative characters and thereby to select some of them for hybridization programme.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Station, Cotton Development Board, Rangpur. Seeds were sown on July 2, 1992. Spacing was I m x 1 m, one genotype was grown in one row of 10m length. Recommended agronomic practices were followed during crop growth. Data were taken from 5 random plants from each entry on first fruiting node number; days to first flower, number of primary and secondary sympodia per plant, days to first boll split, boll weight (g), number of bolls per plant, plant height (cm), ginning outtern (GOT) (%) and seed cotton yield per plant (g). Mean data were used in the analysis. Non-hierechical clustering, PCA and CYA were done by computer using Genstat programme (Payne et al.. 1989).

Achievement/Findings:

From CVA analysis it was observed that 3 clusters were distinctly isolated. The longest distance (15.67) was found between Cluster-II and Cluster III and the shortest distance (7.37) was observed between Cluster-I and Cluster-Ill. The distance between Cluster-I and Cluster-II was 10.30. The genotypic diversity analysis revealed that the genotypes, B-61-2037. C-1412, 91-16-4 and S-71803985 were considerably diverse and may be selected for hybridization
