Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study involving split root technique was conducted under green house condition to evaluate the interrelationships among K, Ca and Mg and their uptake by rice plants. The plants cultured in nutrient solutions were supplied with 6 combinations of K, Ca and Mg under 4 pH ranges. The roots were divided into 0-4 divisions depending on nutrient combinations. K and Ca were antagonistic to Mg uptake and the former had more retarding effect than the latter. Conversely, Ca and Mg in the solution were unfavourable to K uptake, Although the uptake of anyone of the cations was impeded by anyone of the remaining two, a combination of the three was synergistic irrespective of pH ranges. This was also reflected on the yield parameters.

Objectives:

The present investigation involves dividing the root system of individual plant into different portions and allowing the roots to proliferate in different flasks containing nutrients, either separately or in different combinations.

Methodology:

The split-root hydroponics experiment was carried out in triplicates in a completely randomized design in the green house of the Department of Soil Science, University of Dhaka. The total number of nutrient treatment combinations were 6 and 4 pH ranges wee maintained for each of the nutrient treatment. So, the total number of treatment combinations was 24. The concentrations of K, Ca and Mg were constant but the combinations varied emanating from root division treatments. Treatments 1= K, Ca. Mg separate treatments, and rest; roots divided into 4 parts. T₂=Combined treatments of K, Ca. Mg and rest: roots divided into 2 parts. T₃= K + Ca. Mg and rest; roots divided into 3 parts. T₄= K + Mg, Ca. and rest; roots divided into 3 parts. T₅ = Ca + Mg, K, and rests; roots divided into 3 parts. T6= All nutrients in one set; no root division. Rice (variety BR1) was selected as the experimental crop for their less aeration requirement and well developed root system. Lockard's (1959) nutrient culture solution was selected for this study. Stock solutions were prepared by dissolving reagent grade chemical compounds (Merck & BDH) in deionized water and aliquots were taken and mixed together to make different nutrient combinations. Four pH ranges. 4.0-5.0, 5.0-6.0, 60-70 and 7.0-8.0 were maintained throughout the experiment and were adjusted by 0.01N HCI and/or 0.01N NH₄OH once a week using corning glass electrode pH meter. Pyrex conical flasks of 500 ml capacity were painted black to cut off the entry of Iight and firmly fastened together to suit different treatments. Seeds were germinated on stainless wire nets covered with cotton gauze over distilled water. The young seedlings were supplied with 1/2 strength Lockard (1959) nutrient solution. Specially designed wooden benches of 3' x l' x 3' sizes were fixed to support the plants and flasks containing the roots. There were 12 holes in the upper surface of each bench arranged in 2 rows. Eight week old seedlings were transplanted at the rate of one healthy plant per hole.
