Performance of Rice-duck Farming on Weed and Insect Control, Grain Yield and Economic Return

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Integrated rice-duck farming research has been going on in Bangladesh since 2001 to observe its potentiality as an environment friendly and economically rewarding production system. Integrated rice-duck farming was found very suitable in two locations of Sylhet and Barisal region. In rice-duck system insect and weed population were observed very low compared to farmers' practice. Beneficial insect population was similar in rice-duck system and farmers' plots. The grain yield increased in rice-duck plots due to increased number of panicles per unit area and grains number per panicle. Besides, ducks efficiently control weeds, insects and added nutrients to the soil, which contributed to higher grain yield. This system was free from the application of chemical fertilizers and other agro-chemicals. This system increases grain yield (20%), increases income (50%) of the farmers as well as nutritional status of food of the farmers by the availability of duck meat and eggs and makes environment family.

Objectives:

To have clear understanding on integrated system of producing rice and duck simultaneously from same piece of land for improving the productivity of rice and income of resource poor farmers.

Methodology:

Experiments were initiated in two regions namely Sylhet and Barisal in the North-eastern and Southern part of Bangladesh, respectively in the farmers field during March-June, 2003. Twelve farmers from three villages of Sadar Upazilla, Sylhet and 10 farmers from three villages of Bakerganj Upazilla, Barisal were selected. In each farmer's field 2800 m² land were demarcated to conduct the trials. The land was divided into two equal plots; one is for rice-duck and the other for farmer's own practice. Moreover, an area of 5m x2m was laid out in the farmers' plots where insect and weed control measures were not taken. In rice-duck plots, cowdung were applied at the rate of 5 ton ha^-1at the time of land preparation. Strong levee was made to separate the two plots. The popular rice varieties BR14 and Mala (BR2) were used in Sylhet and Barisal areas, respectively. In the rice-duck plots, 25 days old seedlings were transplanted in line spacing of 25cm x 20cm. Farmers planted in their field in the same day of rice-duck plots following their own method. After 10 days of transplanting, 20 days old duckling were released in the rice-duck plots. Ducks were kept in the field for 2 to 4 hours for first 3-5 days. Later it was kept in the field from morning to evening. A synthetic thread net was used to surround the rice duck plots to ensure the ducks in the plots and to keep them safe from wild animals. In the farmers' plots, they applied nitrogen fertilizer as top dressing and sprayed insecticide once and weeded two times as their usual practice. In the rice-duck plots, weeding, insecticide and chemical fertilizers were not used. After removing ducks from rice plots, it was then reared in pond and natural marshy land. After four months of age, the ducks were either sold or kept for egg and meat purposes. Each farmers plot was treated as replication and data was statistically analyzed by computer in M-stat program. Data were taken on plant height (at maximum tillering), tiller no. hill^-1 (at panicle initiation), weed population (count at 60 days after transplanting), yield contributing characters and grain yield. Insect data were collected between 30-50 days after transplanting of crop. Economic analysis was done with partial budgeting method.
