Soda-anthraquinone and Low Sulphidity Kraft Anthraquinone Pulping of Muli Bamboo (melocanna Baccifera) and Mixed Wood in a Mixture.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pulping of bamboo-hardwoods in a mixture showed that H-factor required in soda +AQ and low sulphidity kraft +AQ was slightly lower than the calculated value from the mixture of the components. The total pulp yield for kraft₁₅ +AQ was higher than the calculated value. But for soda +AQ it was lower from the theoretical value. The tensile strength of the pulp obtained in soda +AQ process was better upto 60% bamboo chips in the mixture. It showed superior quality with more than 60% bamboo in the component in low sulphidity kraft pulping. The bursting strength of the pulp decreased as the bamboo chips increased in kraft₁₅ +AQ pulping. The tear strength behaved almost linearly with any proportion of bamboo chips with wood chips.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of AQ (anthraquinone) in soda and low sulphidity kraft pulping of the mixture of muli bamboo and mixed hardwoods.

Methodology:

Mill-cut muli bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) and mixed hardwood chips were collected from the Karnaphuli Paper Mills. The chips were washed with water to remove the adhering impurities, air dried for 15 days. The dry matter content of the chips was determined. The pulping was conducted in autoclaves with 300 g OD Chip. Sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphide were used as cooking chemicals. Pulping was done by kraft process at a sulphidity 15% and soda process with 0.05% AQ. Other cooking conditions were as follows:

Active alkali as NaOH, 19%
Liquor to bamboo-hardwood chips, 4:1
Rise of temperature from room temperature to 70°C, 15 minutes and from 70°C to 170ºC, 90 min.

Cooking time at 170°C, varying.

The cooked chips were then discharged and black liquor were collected. This black liquor was analyzed subsequently for residual alkali. The cooked chips were ;then washed with running water and disintegrated in a laboratory disintegrator. The pulp was screened on a flat vibratory screen with 0.507 mm slots. The screened pulp was pressed to removed excess water, shredded and weighed. Yield and Kappa number were determined. The pulp was beaten in a mill to different SR levels at 6% consistency. Standard handsheets of 60 G/m² were made in a Karl-Frank laboratory sheet former. Then the hand sheets were conditioned at a temperature of 23 ± 2⁰C and relative humidity of 50 ± 1% before evaluating the strength properties as per SCAN-C 28:69. The strength properties were evaluated at 30 and 40⁰SR levels by interpolation.

Achievement/Findings:

The investigation in the pulping of bamboo and mixed hardwoods in a mixture reveals that an advantage is seen in the delignification point of view. In the kraft₁₅ + AQ pulping maximum yield gain was obtained by using upto 40% bamboo chips with wood. In soda + AQ process, the total yield was lower in any combination of the mixture components. The tensile strength of the pulp in soda + AQ process was better upto 60% bamboo chips in the mixture. It showed superior properties with more than 60% bamboo in the component in low sulphidity kraft AQ pulping. The bursting strength in the mixture was almost the same with that from the components in soda + AQ process. It was slightly inferior in kraft₁₅ + AQ pulping as the proportion of chips increased. The tear strength of the pulp remained unchanged compared with that of the components.
