Combining Ability for Yield and Component Characters in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A diallel cross comprising six rice varieties (BR 6. BR 14. BR 17. BR 24. BR 28 and BR 29) was studied for eight different characters to determine the nature of gene action in parental and hybrid population. The parents BR6. BR24 and BR28 for earliness. BR 17 for plant height. BR6 and BR29 for panicle/ plant. BR 17 and BR29 for panicle length. BR 17, BR28 and BR29 for fertile grain/ panicle, BR 14 for 1000 grain weight and BR29 for grain yield/ plant were the good general combiners. Specific crosses for lateness were observed by crossing parents with good general combiners for earliness. Good specific crosses for yield/ plant and other component characters were obtained from good x poor or poor x poor crosses than even from good x good cross combinations. depicting the importance of additive and non-additive gene actions with a predominant role of non-additive components in the inheritance of the characters studied. For Improvement of the crop, adoption of suitable methods exploiting additive and non additive gene effects is suggested

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to identify good general combiners for yield and its attributes for six BR varieties so as to use them in hybridization program for improving grain yield based on 6 x 6 diallel fashion.

Methodology:

Six varieties of rice namely, BR 6, BR I4, BR I7, BR 24, BR 28 and BR 29 were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals in 1993. All the parents and their 15 F₁s were grown in the net house Plant Breeding Division, BRRI during Boro season in 1994. Randomized complete block design was used with two replications. The plot size was 3.9 m x 2 rows with plant spacing 25 cm between rows and 15 cm within rows. Forty days old seedlings were transplanted with single seedling per hill. Observations recorded on 10 randomly selected plants from each entry on days to maturity, plant height, panicles/ plant, panicle length, sterility percent, fertile grain/ panicle, 1000- grain weight and yield/ plant. Analysis of combining ability was done according to griffing (1956) Model I, Method 2. Based on mean squares expectations, estimates of gca variances (O^'²g) were obtained as I /n+2 (gca MS- sca MS) and that of sca variance (O²s) as (sca MS-error MS) where 'n' equals the number of parents (Singh & Chaudhary, 1979).

Achievement/Findings:

Only two crosses BR29/ BR24 and BR 14/ BR28 out of nine crosses involving late and early maturing parents exhibited significant sca for lateness and five crosses viz. BR 29/BR 28, and BR I7/ BR6 exhibited significant sca for earliness. The crosses BR 29/BR 14, BR 29/BR 17 and BR 14 /BR 17 involving both late maturing parents showed significant sca for lateness. Good x poor or poor x poor crosses also showed high sca effects for other characters than even from good x good cross combination depicting the importance of additive x dominance or dominance x dominance gene interactions. Since importance of additive as well as non additive genetic components it highlighted by the present study. the improvement in yield and its attributes would be possible by resorting to biparental matings amon desirable plants in early segregating generations. Further exploitation of these segregant will also help developing lines having optimum homozygous and heterozygous balance.
