Residual Effects of Deep Tillage on the Yield and Nutrient (npk) Uptake by Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A three-year field experiment was conducted in the grey floodplain soil of Sonatala series to study the irrigation and residual tillage effects on the yield and nutrient uptake (NPK) by rice. Deep tillage performed in the preceding wheat field significantly increased the yield of rice by about 20 per cent over the the traditionally tilled treatment. Deep tillage also contributed to the higher uptake of nitrogen and potassium by rice plants. Phosphorus uptake by rice was not influenced by tillage operations.

Objectives:

To study the irrigation and residual effects of tillage done on the preceding wheat crop on the growth, yield and NPK Uptake by rice.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted in the grey floodplain soil of Sonatala series during the aus seasons of 1983, 1984 and 1985 to study the irrigation and residual effects of tillage operations performed in the preceding wheat crop on the yield and nutrient uptake (NPK) by rice. The soil properties have been reported in detail by Rahman (1987): The split-plot design experiment comprised of four irrigation treatments in the main plots viz. W₁ -continuous submergence with 5 cm standing water, W₂- application of 5 cm water, allowed to drain upto saturation followed by application of 5 cm water, W₃-application of 5 cm water, allowed to drain upto 0.1 bar potential and apply 5 cm water, W₄-application of 5 cm water allowed to drain upto 0.2 bar potential and apply 5 cm water. Tensiometers in W3 and W4 were placed at 15 cm soil depth. Irrigation treatments during 1983 growing season only could partially be maintained, whereas in 1984 and 1885, all the irrigation treatments were virtually same as there was almost continuous rainfall during the growing period and the treatments could not be maintained properly. The tillage operations performed in the preceding Wheat crop in the sub-plots were: A-traditional ploughing to a depth of 7.5 cm, B-deep tillage to a depth of 15 cm, C-deep tillage to a depth of 22.5 cm and D-deep tillage to a depth of 22.5 cm practiced in alternate Wheat seasons. Three week old rice seedlings (cv. BR3) were transplanted in all the sub-plots after usual puddling. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 40 Kg N, 80 Kg P₂0₅, 60 Kg K₂0 and 5 Kg Zn ha^-1 from urea, TSP, MP and Zinc sulphate, respectively during final land preparation. 40 Kg N ha^-1 from urea Were again applied each time at 30 and 60 days after transplanting. Weeding was done twice manually during each growing season. Yield and yield contributing characters and N, P, and K uptake by rice were studied.

Achievement/Findings:

In general, uptake of NPK by rice grain and straw increased with deep tillage performed in the preceding wheat crop. Therefore, uptake of nutrients by rice in the deep-tilled plots would be higher from a larger soil volume around the root zone which resulted into increased crop yield.
