A two-year field experiment was conducted in Boro season at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Farm, Gazipur during the period of 2002-2003 to create and compare a suitable fertilizer recommendation model for lowland rice. Five different fertilizer recommendation models were tested and compared  with one  check plot.  Results  show  that  the  application  of different  packages  estimated  by different  fertilizer  models  significantly  increased  the  plant height, tiller  and  panicle numbers,  spikelet numbers, straw and grain yields of BRRI dhan29 than the control plot in both the years of the experiment. From economic analysis, it was shown that payback from 1 taka investment of treatment T3 was the highest (2.32 taka) followed by T4 (2.20 taka). Thus, BRRI fertilizer recommendation (proposed) - (T3 ) may be used for the high and moderate resource based farmers and Arkansas University model-(T4 ) may be used for the low resource based farmers.

To create  and compare a suitable fertilizer recommendation model  for lowland  rice.

A two-year field experiment was conducted in Boro  season  at the Bangladesh  Rice  Research Institute  (BRRI)  Farm, Gazipur  (AEZ-28,  land type-MHL) during the  period  of  2002-2003. The soil of the experimental field  is clay loam in texture and  slightly in acidic nature. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block (RCB) design  with three replications. Five fertilizer recommendation models  were tested and compared  with one check plot. These were as follows: T1 =Check  (no  fertilizer); T2  = Soil  Test Based (STB) dose for high yield goal (HYG) (Anonymous,1997); T3 BRRI fertilizer recommendation  (proposed);  T4  Arkansas University,   USA;   T5 =  QUEFTS    (Quantitative Evaluation of Fertility  of Tropical  Soils)  and T6  = SSNM   (Site-specific nutrient  management). The sources  of N, P, K, S and Zn were urea, triple superphosphate,  muriate   of  potash,   gypsum   and zinc sulfate, respectively. One-third  of the N and all the P, K, S and Zn were applied  at the time of final  land  preparation. The  remaining   two-third  of  the  N was  applied  in two   equal   installments:  25-30   days  after transplanting and  7  days  before  panicle  initiation stage. The  test variety  was BRRI dhan29.  Three or four forty-five day-old  seedlings were transplanted in the spacing  of 20 cm x 20 cm. Appropriate   cultural    and   management practices  including plant  protection  measures  were taken  during  each  growing   season.  The  plot  size was  7 m  x 3  m.  The  crops   were   harvested   at maturity  from  a  2.5  m  x 2  m  area.  Plant  height from 20 randomly  selected  plants in each plot and panicle   number  from   16  random   hills   per  plot, spikelet   numbers,   percent   unfilled   grain, 1000- grain  weight  from  10  randomly  selected  plants  in each  plot  were recorded  at maturity.   Grain  yields (14 % moisture) and straw  yields  (oven  dry basis) were recorded. Statistical analyses were performed and means were compared by the Least Significant Difference (LSD)  test.  Economic  analyses  were  done  for  net benefit and benefit cost ratio for different fertilizer recommendation  models (Saha et at. 1998).
