Multivariate Analysis in Pumpkin (cucurbita Moschata)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetic divergence among 27 genotypes of pumpkin Cucurbita moschata Ouch ex Poir) collected from eight districts of Bangladesh was estimated using D² and principal component analysis, The genotypes were grouped into seven clusters, No relationship was found between genetic divergence and geographic distribution of the genotypes, Maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster II & VII and was minimum between cluster V & VI. Number of fruits per plant and yield per plant showed maximum contribution to the total divergence, The results obtained by d analysis were confirmed by Principal component analysis.

Objectives:

To find out the magnitude, nature and interaction of genotypic and environmental variations in the plant characters of pumpkin.

Methodology:

The experiment with 27 diverse pumpkin genotypes collected from different parts of the country representing the most adapted cultivars in different region was conducted during December 1994 to May 1995. All the 27 genotypes were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Experimental Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur. Sprouted seeds dibbled in polythene bags (22X9 cm) filled up with potting mixture in December 28, 1994. Eighteen days old healthy seedling at 3-4 leaf stage were transplanted in 4 m² plots in four pits and two plants each. Fertilizers of 150 kg Urea, 125 kg TSP, 100 kg MP and 15000 kg Cowdung per hectare were applied as basal and three split applications. Observations were recorded on three randomly selected plants per replication for vine length (cm) at final harvest, days to maturity, fruit length (crn), fruit diameter (cm), fruit weight (kg), flesh thickness(cm), brix (%), sex ratio (male:female), fruits per plant, yield per plant (kg), seeds per fruit, dry weight of seeds per fruit (g) and dry matter (%). Plot means over three replications were used for statistical analysis. Genetic diversity was studied following Mahalanobis's (1936) generalized distance (D²) extended by Rao (1952). Clustering of genotypes was done according to Tocher's method (Rao, 1952) and Principal Component analysis (Rao, 1964) for graphical representation of the genotypes. All the statistical analysis were carried out using GENSTAT5 programme in IBM computer.

Achievement/Findings:

The crosses involving parents belonging to the maximum divergent clusters were expected to manifest maximum heterosis and also wide variability in genetic architecture. Thus crosses between the genotypes of cluster IV with that of cluster I, II, V, VI and VII would exhibit high heterosis and is also likely to produce new recombinants with desired characters in pumpkin.
