Temporal Trend of Wind Speed Due to Changes of Climate in North Central Hydrological Region of Bangladesh for Predicting Reference Crop Evapotranspiration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Wind speed plays an important role in the reference crop evapotranspiration process. A decline tendency of wind speed is one of the major causes for the negative trend of the reference crop evapotranspiration due to changes of climate in many places of the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term trend of wind speed due to changes of climate in North Central hydrological region of Bangladesh for predicting reference crop evapotranspiration. Dhaka and Mymensingh districts of North Central Hydrological Region of Bangladesh were selected for this study. Daily wind speed data for a period of 30 years (1976- 2005) was collected from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. The decade and month-wise wind speed at 2 m height trend was detected and estimated by MAKESENS trend model. Study showed decreasing/significant decreasing trend of wind speed in all times of year in Dhaka and Mymensingh districts. Decreasing rate of wind speed may play in decreasing rate reference crop evapotranspiration processes. This study can provide basic information on causes for variability of reference crop evapotranspiration due to changes of climate in North Central hydrological region of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

1. To investigate the temporal trend of wind speed due to changes of climate for reference crop evapotranspiration processes in North Central hydrological region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Daily wind speed data of Dhaka and Mymensingh for a period of 30 years (1976-2005) was collected from Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Bangladesh. Then wind speed at 2 m height was calculated by using the standrad formula. Daily estimated wind speed at 2 m height values were reduced to decade and monthly mean in each year. The trend of computed decade and month wise wind speed at 2 m height values was detected and estimated by MAKESENS trend model. The MAKESENS is a software computer model, which was developed using Microsoft Excel 97, and the macros were coded with Microsoft Visual Basic. MAKESENS performed two types of statistical analyses. First the presence of a monotonic increasing or decreasing trend was tested with the nonparametric Mann-Kendall test and secondly, the slope of a linear trend was estimated with the nonparametric Sen's method.
