Water Management Practices for Crop Production in Seasonal Saline Soil of Khulna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farmers in the coastal area usually grow rice during wet (Kharif ll) months (July-October) when salinity goes down due to onset of monsoon. During Rabi season (November-February) and Kharif I (March-June), most of the area remains fallow due to salinity. The study was initiated how the seasonal soil can be brought under cultivation through water management practices controlling soil salinity. A randomized complete block design experiment was conducted at Jhapusa, Khulna during November, 1998 to February, 1999 through salinity control by leaching process applying saline river water. The crop grown was mustard (Brassica campesteries) mutant (BINA-2) evolved at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA). Different seed placement techniques as: (i) seeds on flat bed, (ii) double row crops with furrow drains, and (iii) crops on drain slope were followed as treatments along with similar leaching practice for all treatments. Treatments had significant effect on the seed yield of mustard. Highest seed yield was obtained for crops on placed drain slope. Analysis of data reveled that irrigation with saline river water through fulfilling the leaching requirement and seed placed on the drain slope have been proved to be a successful wafer management technique to obtain optimum yield of mustard in saline area.

Objectives:

1. To see how the seasonal saline soil can be brought under cultivation through water management practices controlling soil salinity.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted during Rabi season (November-February) at saline area Jhapusa, Rupsa, Khulna to recommend suitable water management practices. The salinity of soil of the experimental area obtained from saturation extract found to be 4 to 8 dSm^-1where yield of many crops are restricted. The experiment was laidout in randomized complete block (RCB) design having three treatments with four replications. D_o = Crops on flat bed (no drains) D₁ = Double row crops with drains D₂ = Crops on drains slope The texture of the experimental soil and average bulk density were clay loam and I .60 gm/cc, receptively. Seeds of mustard mutant line (BINA-2) were seeded on 17 November, 1998. Soil water content and salinity at the time of sowing were 43.82%, 0.66 dSm^-1. respectively. Irrigation water was applied at early, vegetative and flowering stages of mustard. The depth of irrigation water was calculated using equation.The source of irrigation water was saline river water from the river Rupsa. The salinity of river water was found to be in the range of 0.43- to 2.5 dSm^-1 .Electrical conductivity of soil and water was measured using salinity bridge. Leaching requirement (LR) estimation was essential to calculate the depth of irrigation water. The fraction of irrigation water that must be leached through root zone to keep the salinity of the soil below a specific limit is termed as leaching requirement
