Characterisation and Classification of Some Saline Belt Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three pedons occurring in basins of Ganges tidal flood plain were studied in order to characterize and classify them. The soils have less than 2 per cent soluble salts in all horizons. Na⁺ is the dominant cation in the soil solution while Cl^- and S0₄²^- arc the dominant anions. ESP and EC are more than 15 per cent and 4 mmhos cm^-1respectively. Physical and chemical characteristics indicate intrapcdon vertical downward movement of both mineral and organic materials. All the three pedons are to be classified as Typic Natraqualf and seem to belong to the same soil series, Assasuni, according to (SRDI, 1975).

Objectives:

A detailed characterization of morphological, physical and chemical properties of saline soils and systematic categorization of these soils are very important for their management. With this view in consideration, three soil pedons of saline belt were studied.

Methodology:

Three pedons representing basin soils of calcareus tidal floodplain were selected for this study. Soil samples were collected from each herizon of each pedon. Sampling was done during the month of February and were analysed in the laboratory. Particle size distribution was done by the hydrometer method. Maximum moisture holding capacity and moisture content at saturation point were measured according to the methods by Piper. Soil reaction (pH) was determined by Beckman's glass-electrode method, organic carbon content by Walkley and Black method, total nitrogen by Kjeldahl method. calcium carbonate content by rapid titration method. Chloride and bicarbonat by titration with silver nitrate and hydrochloric acid respectively, soluble sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium were estimated by using name photometer and atomic absorption spectrophotmeter respectively. Sodium acetate method was used for determination of cation exchange capacity, and exchangeable sodium and potassium by ammonium acetate method.

Achievement/Findings:

Since the soluble salt content is below 2% in each pedon, there is no salic horizon in any of three soils. According to FAO-UNESCO, all the three soils belong to Glei-Sodic Solonchak.
