Screening of Chickpea Entries for Resistance to Fusarium Wilt

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three hundred and seventy chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) entries were screened against Fusarium wilt ( Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri ) in a well developed wilt sick plot at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, during four consecutive years. Based on percentage of mortality due to wilt, 8 entries were graded as resistant, 29 intermediate and 33 susceptible. Among the resistant entries ICC 11322 had only 2.5% mortality and it produced the highest yield of 2830 Kg/ha.

Objectives:

The present investigation was therefore, undertaken to evaluate a large number of chickpea entries for resistant sources against Fusarium wilt.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in a well-developed wilt sick-plot at Pulses Research Center, lshurdi, Pabna. The sick plot was developed according to the method described by Nene et al. (1981). A total of 370 chickpea entries were screened in the sick plot. Among them 109, 49, 149 and 63 entries were screened during 1989-90, 1990-91, 1992-93 and 1993-94 respectively. Each of the entries was planted in one row of 5m long. A highly susceptible entry ICC-4951 was sown after every two test entry as check. Row to row distance was 50 cm and plant to plant distance was 10 cm. The whole sets were replicated twice

Achievement/Findings:

Some other entries viz. ICC 15178, ICCV 89213, ICCV 11 and ICC 3274 were also found resistant and they gave a good yield. The entry ICC 11322 gave the highest yield of 2830 Kg/ha with the lowest mortality and the entry ICC 4918 Raj gave the lowest yield of 1000 Kg/ha with the highest mortality.
