Assessment of Sub-surface Lithology and Aquifer Conditions of Fulbaria Thana for Groundwater Development

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Lithogical study was conducted for groundwater development in Fulbaria Thana. The graphically presented sub-surface lithology as obtained from borelogs of thirteen deep tubewells from thirteen individual unions of the Thana provided information on vertical and lateral extent of different layers and distribution of formation materials. The aquifer formation was stratified with clay, silty clay, sandy clay and fine sand at the upper portion while medium sand, coarse sand, gravels and their mixtures at the lower portion. The thickness of clay, silty or sandy clay layers ranged from 3 to 31.5111 having an average thickness of 21.82m that existed below the ground surface. The thickness of composite aquifer varied from 14 to 47m having an average thickness of 46.3m. The thickness of the main or exploitable aquifer ranged from 24 to 69.5m having an average thickness of 46.3m. The aquifer formations provide indications that the aquifer at the study area is found to be well productive and has the potential for groundwater abstraction.

Objectives:

1. To assess the sub-surface lithology and aquifer conditions for groundwater development.

Methodology:

The borelogs of an area indicate the lithology and textural properties of sub- surface materials and vary considerably from place to place. Borelogs are the most reliable means of knowing the sub-surface geological condition of an area and their availability is essentially pre-requisite for such a study. The brelogs and fixtures of 13 deep tubewells (DTW) -- one from each union of Fulbaria Thana have been collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation office, Mymensingh. Sub-surface geological cross-section or stratigraphic cross-section are normally the best method in ascertaining both lateral and vertical extension of aquifers. The lithological interpretation is made from the records of the occurrence of particle size, on a percentage basis. The stratigraphic views of the lithological logs of the underground formation consist of clay, silt, very fine sand, fine sand, medium sand, coarse sand and gravel. From the lithological investigations, it was found that the first screenable materials began from a depth of 10 meters. Coarse sand and gravel were obtained generally below 25m to 40m from the ground surface. Contour map of aquifer thickness was also drawn to find the variation of aquifer thickness in the study area. Contour provides the opportunity to judge the homogeneity and non-homogeneity of aquifer material thickness over the entire area. The panel diagram is a lithologic section of sub-surface rock materials which differs from simple geologic cross-section by its three dimensional appearance on the diagram. A three dimensional isometric view (panel diagram) of the vertical and lateral stratification of the sub-surface formation have been constructed based on 13 borelogs lithology which is representative of the whole study area.
