Phosphorus Fertilizer Effects on Nitrogen Fixation, Dry Matter Accumulation, Yield and Oil Content of Groundnut (arachis Hypogaea L)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of phosphorus fertilizer on nitrogen fixation, dry matter production, P uptake, yield and yield attributes and oil content in ground nut (Arachis hypogaea L.) varieties were evaluated. The application of phosphorus fertilizer increased the number of nodules, weight and nitrogenase activity in three groundnut varieties. The highest dry matter, P uptake, yield components and pod yield in Basantibadam (Virginia type) was with 19.5 mg P kg^-I soil while 13 mg P kg^-1 soil gave the highest yield in Dhaka-1 and Zingabadam. Varieties Dhaka-I and Zhingabadam gave more shelling percentage and oil content than Basantibadam. The shelling percentage, protein and oil content in the seeds tended to increase progressively with the increase in P rates upto 19.5 mg kg^-I soil.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of phosphorus fertilizer on N₂-fixation, dry matter production, P uptake, yield, harvest index, protein and oil contents in groundnut.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur from November 1997 to May 1995. Groundnut plants were raised in earthen pots (26 cm diameter and 24 cm height) each containing 12 kg soil. Four levels of phosphorus (0, 6.5, 13 and 19.5 mg P kg^-1 soil corresponding to 0, 30, 60, and 90 kg P₂O₅ ha^--1) and three varieties of ground nut (Dhaka-L, Zhingabadam and Basantibadam) were used as experimental materials. A blanket rate of 180 mg N pot^-1, 250 mg K pot^-1 and 180 mg Spot ^-1in the form of urea, muriate of potash and gypsum was added and well mixed with the soil before pouring into the pots. In addition, cowdung was applied at the rate of 30,000 mg pot^-1 . Plants were sampled at 30, 60, 90, 120 DAE and at maturity (M) cutting at the base and segmented into components and green leaf area was measured by an automatic leaf area meter. Plant materials were oven dried at 70⁰C to a constant weight and dry weight taken. At 50% flowering, plants were harvested with intact roots, washed with distilled water, nodules separated from the upper parts, and placed individually in conical flask. The flasks were sealed with air tight rubber septum and 10% of the air was replaced with acetylene gas. The amount of ethylene was measured using the following formula: C f.l mol. C₂ H₂ plant^-1 hour^-1 = ((b-a) x volume of conical flask x 60)/ 30.The percentage of protein in seeds was calculated by multiplying the nitrogen percentage with 6.25. The oil content in the samples was determined following solvent extraction method by using petroleum ether in Soxhlet apparatus. At maturity, the yield attributes were recorded. Data thus collected were subjected to analysis of variance and LSD was used for mean separation.
