Combining Ability and Inheritance of Grain Yield and Its Attributes in F2 Generation of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A diallel set of 8 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties/lines was studied in F₂ generation to determine the combining ability and genetic parameters for grain yield, effective tillers per plant, spikelets per spike and 100-grain weight. Combining ability analysis indicated that both gca and sca variances were significant for all the traits studied. However, the gca variance was predominant for effective tillers per plant, 100-grain weight and spikelets per spike indicating additive genetic effect. For grain yield, the sca variance was predominant indicating non additive component was important. Graphical analysis and components of genetic variance analysis also revealed similar results. Narrow sense heritability estimate was found low for grain yield per plant and moderate to high for the other three traits. Combining ability analysis, component of genetic variation analysis and regression co-efficient of variance and co-variance analysis for estimating the type of gene action have given comparable results for the traits studied. Grain yield per plant was controlled by non-additive gene and recessive genes, therefore, both family and line selection may be employed for breeding high yielding genotypes

Objectives:

To know the combining ability effects of yield components in Wheat

Methodology:

The materials comprising viz., Kanchan (Kan), Aghrani (Agh), Pavon 76 (Pvn 76), Sonora 64 (Son 64), Seri 82, UP 262, BAW 50 and BAW 60 were crossed to produce half-diallel set. The 28 F₁ 's single crosses (excluding reciprocals) were selfed to produce F₂ seeds in order to replicate the treatments. The materials consisting of 8 parents and 28 F₂'s were sown in a randomized complete block design with four replications at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore. Each parental and F₂ family was assigned to one row and six row plots in a block, respectively. The plants were spaced at 10 cm in rows of 4m long and 30 cm apart. Two outer rows of a family plot were not used for recording observations. Data were collected on randomly selected 50 plants in each of the four inner rows of a plot in F₂ and 10 plants in each parental row for grain yield per plant, effective tillers per plant, 100-grain weight and number of spikelets per spike

Achievement/Findings:

Present study revealved that combining ability analysis, component of genetic variation analysis and regression co-efficient of variance and co-variance analysis (graphs not shown) for estimating the type of gene action have given comparable results for all the traits. High heritability estimate, complementary gene interaction, dominant and recessive gene effects suggested that these parents could be used to develop better lines and both family selection and line selection programme will be effective for breeding high yielding genotypes
