An experiment was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University to observe the change in growth pattern of mungbean cutivars at two populatin densities. Two mungbean cultivars namely BARI Mung 2 and BARI Mung 5 with two population densities viz. 33 and 50 plants m-2 were considered as treatment variables. The four treatment combinations were assigned randomly in a randomized complete block design. Plants were sampled from 1 m2 area at seven days interval beginning from 18 days after emergence for determination of different growth parameters of mungbean cultivars. There was no remarkable difference in growth pattern of mungbean cultivars over the growth periods. But density had profound effects on growth parameters of mungbean. Among the cultivars, BAR! Mung 2 responded little in growth parameters to increased population density. Contrarily, BARI Mung 5 showed a wide plasticity to growth at higher population density and maintained better growth parameters in all over the growth periods. At higher density, BARI Mung 5 beard higher leaf area index at post flowering phase which narrowed down the source limitation of mungbean and increased the dry matter partitioning to reproductive organs.

To observe the growth pattern of mungbean cultivars at two population densities.

A field experiment was carried out at the BSMR Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during summer season of 1999 . Two cultivars of mungbean namely BARI Mung 2 and BARI Mung 5 with two population densities viz. 33 and 50 plants m-2 were considered as treatments variables. Treatments were assigned randomly in the unit plot of 10m x 5m in an experimental design of randomized complete block design. A fertilizer dose of 40-60-20 kg N, P205 and K20 ha-1 was applied in form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash respectively. Half of nitrogen and full dose of P205 and K20 were applied as basal during final land preparation. The rest half of N was applied in two installments at 21 and 33 days after sowing of mungbean seeds. Mungbean seeds were sown on March 8 with the spacing 30 x10 cm and 20 x 10 for each cultivar to maintain 33 and 50 plants m-2 respectively. Light irrigation was applied one day after sowing. Seedlings emerged by March 11 and at first trifoliate stage seedlings were carefully thinned to retain one seedling per hill. Soil mulching and hand weeding were done three times at 11, 20 and 25 days after sowing (DAS). Irrigation was applied several times with sprinkler system to avoid any moisture stress. Insecticides (Agodtin 40 WSC, Cymbush 10 EC, Diazinon 60 EC) were sprayed time to time to keep the crop free from insect attack. Plant samples were taken from unit area at seven days interval beginning from 18 days after emergence until maturity for the determination of various growth parameters. Leaf area of sampled plant was also measured with an automatic leaf area meter. The above ground portion of the plants were partitioned into stem, leaf petiole and reproductive organs and oven dried at 70°C for 72 hours and weighed. On the basis of dry matter accumulation and leaf area, the growth parameters like leaf area index (LAD, crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were calculated.
