Groundwater Resources Assessment for Development Planning of Tubewell Irrigation System in Fulbaria Thana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in Fulbaria Thana during 1998-99 to make overall assessment of groundwater resources for tube well irrigation. Parameters evaluated were transmissibility, storage co-efficient, groundwater fluctuation, specific draw-down, specific capacity, groundwater movement direction, potential recharge, and well spacing. Transmissibility (T) values ranged from 726.57 to 2100.25 m²/day and 1110.88 to 2278.28 m²/day using Theis recovery and Jacob's time-draw down method, respectively. Storage coefficient (S_o) varied from 0.00233 to 0.00525 considering only Jacob's time- draw-down method. The static water level started rising from the middle of May and continued up to September or October. Average specific draw-down and specific capacity were 171.12 m/cumec and 0.0058 cumec/m, respectively, obtained from multi-step pumping test data. The recharge and depletion characteristics were found almost in equilibrium condition. The long-term trend of groundwater level was found to be in declining position in the recent years. In the dry period, groundwater moved mainly towards northeast and partly towards southeast direction. In late monsoon, the movement was mainly towards north direction. Average annual potential recharge was 546 mm and 554 mm by well hydrograph and Sehgal's empirical method, respectively. Proposed well spacing based on peak irrigation requirement for different operating hours with various combination of well discharge (28.3- 85.0 l/sec) varied from 451 m to 1106 m. Well spacing of 423 to 1043 m may be suggested based on available recharge. All these results may be utilized in any groundwater development programme for Fulbaria thana.

Objectives:

1. To justify the feasibility of groundwater development in Fulbaria thana.

Methodology:

The study area covers 399 krn². Fulbaria thana has 13 unions. Pumping test data for 13 deep tube wells from 13 unions were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Mymensingh. The monthly static groundwater level data for the same deep tubewells for the period 1990-1998 was also collected from BADC. Meteorological information was collected from Bangladesh Meteorological Department and Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). Mean monthly rainfall data for 10 years were also collected from BWDB. Jacorb's time draw-down and Theis's recovery methods were used for evaluating transmissibility (T) of aquifer at different locations. The former method was also used to evaluate the storage co-efficients (S_o) of the aquifer. Average specific draw-down and specific capacity were also evaluated from pumping test data. Monthly data of static water levels was used to construct contour maps of maximum and minimum depth to water level. These contour maps were used to evaluate the direction of groundwater movement during the dry and wet seasons. The amount of recharge and depletion of the aquifer for each month was calculated from the static water level data for 1994-1999. Annual groundwater recharge (R) was calculated from the product of annual maximum fluctuation (ΔH) and specific yield. The value of average specific yield was considered as 5 percent for the study area from BWDB. Sehgal's empirical mathematical model [R = 2.5 (P- 16)^0.5], where R is the potential recharge in inches and P is the annual rainfall in inches] was also used to estimate the potential recharge. Optimum and safe well spacing was determined based on available recharge and peak irrigation demand.

Achievement/Findings:

The research study generated useful information on groundwater situation and aquifer characteristics of Fulbaria thana on groundwater fluctuation, recharge-depletion pattern, groundwater movement and well spacing depending on irrigation demand. The results obtained can be applied for the entire location without further verification in case of tubewell irrigation.
