Arsenic Accumulation in Rice Grown in Aman and Boro Seasons.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice grains, soils and irrigation water collected from the rice growing fields of highly As contaminated areas of Chandpur district during aman and boro seasons of 2004 were analyzed for As, Fe and P. Arsenic accumulation in the rice grains grown in the boro season has been found to be much higher than that of grown during the aman season. The average boro rice As content was 2.35 with minimum of 1.07 and maximum of 4.42 mg/kg d.w. while the average aman rice As content was 0.91 with minimum of 0.90 and maximum of 1.73 mg/kg d.w. No remarkable variation in the concentration of As in irrigation water between aman and boro seasons was observed. However, the arsenic concentration of aman soil was found to be higher (average 6.67 mg/kg soil) than that of the boro soil (average 3.73 mg/kg soil). Concen trations of phosphorous and iron in grain, soil, and water between the two seasons did not show much variation

Objectives:

To investigate the seasonal variation and magnitude of arsenic accumulation in soil and in rice grown on the same soils used for boro cultivation.

Methodology:

The study focused on the seasonal variation (aman and boro season rice) of arsenic accumulation in soils and its uptake by rice plants. Chandpur district was selected as the sampling site where rice is cultivated both in aman (July - December) and boro (December - June) seasons. Irrigation water, soil and rice grain samples were collected from the fields of highly arsenic contaminated area of the district. The selection of sampling sites was based on the following criteria: (a) soil where ground water contamination by arsenic has been prominent, (b) soil where rice is cultivated both in aman and boro season and (c) irrigation water is a must for the boro rice cultivation..All the grain samples were collected in situ before harvest in both the seasons. Running water from the irrigation channels was collected from the sampling areas. Rice grains and straw were sampled just before harvest. The samples were then processed following the procedures described in Imamul Huq and Alam(¹³) The bulk of the soil samples representing 0 - 15 cm depth from the surface were also collected by composite soil sampling method as suggested by the soil survey staff of the USDA(¹⁴) Replicate samples were collected from the eight sampling sites. The collected water, soil and plant samples were analyzed for total As, P and Fe following the method as described in Imamul Huq et al (^12).

Achievement/Findings:

Seasonal variations in the concentration of arsenic in soils and in rice grains between aman and boro seasons have been found. Aman season soil contained higher amount of As than boro season soils. In spite of a higher concentration of As in soils during the aman season, accumulation of As in rice grains during the boro season however , has been found to be greater than that in the aman season. Further study following a similar approach would help to select suitable variety of rice in As contaminated soil in a particular season. Depending on the irrigation facilities and nature and extent of As uptake, it would be possible to suggest the variety of rice economically sustainable without impairing the health hazards . If accumulation of As by rice grain in a particular season for a particular variety exceeds the safety level, an alternative variety of rice or cultivation of other crops may be recommended .
