Seasonal Abundance of Macrobentidc Fauna Inrelation to Some Physico-chemical Parameters of Water in Three Carp Culture Ponds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study on benthic macroinvertebrates in three carp culture ponds at BCDM, Rajendrapur was carried out from January to December 2001 for the purpose of giving a detail qualitative and quantitative picture and the role of the benthic macro-invertebrates in the production of fish in those ponds. The effect of physico-chemical parameters on the faunal abundance and various interrelationships among them were also observed . The chief components of the macrobenthic fauna were oligochaetes, molluscs and chironomids. Oligochaetes were the dominant group. The highest values were recorded in May in all three ponds which were 2133 ind./m² in pond 3, 2154 ind./m² in pond 6 and 1820 ind./m²in pond 7. Benthos showed a significant relationship with dissolved oxygen in pond 3 (r = 0.697) and pond 7 (r = - 0.661).

Objectives:

To observe the trand of benthos production in order to increase the production of bottom feeder fish.

Methodology:

To carry out the present study three ponds were selected at BCDM campus, Rajedrapur of Gazipur district. Three ponds (Pond Nos. 3, 6 and 7) were of size 194 x 169 sq.ft., 197 x 140 sq. ft. and 178 x 140 sq.ft. respectively. The ponds were rectangular in shape and provided with strong dike and monk fitted outlet system. The ponds were prepared for carp culture by adopting semi-intensive method. The surface water sample was collected directly from the undisturbed surface of each pond once in a month at 0900 hrs during the study period (January to December 2001). The physical parameters of water viz. temperature, colour, depth and transparency were recorded at the spot after collection of water samples. The chemical parameters, viz. pH, DO, C0₂ total hardness, ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen of the water samples were measured on the spot by using a water analysis HACH kit (Model No. FF-2, USA). The bottom soil samples were collected by Ekman dredge (area of lower mouth 225 cm² ) from three stations selected arbitrarily in the pond. Samples were collected once in every month at 0900 hrs. Two bottom soil samples were collected from each pond for collecting benthic fauna. Soil samples were taken on a standard brass sieve of mesh size 0.92 mm whose upper and lower portions were covered by sieve of mesh sizes 0.92 and 0.20 mm, respectively. Mud was washed out through the sieve and the benthic fauna remaining on the sieves were collected carefully by a pair of forcep and preserved in small vials with 5% formalin. The benthic organisms were identified with the help of a compound microscope up to genus using keys given by Ward and Whipple and Needham and Needham. The statistical analysis of the data on important parameters were used to test correlation significance of differences, based on Pearson's correlation coefficient, Duncun's multiple range test (DMRT), respectively. The different parameters were assessed by calculating the correlation coefficients at 1 and 5% level of significance through the SPSS software. DMRT (subset for alpha - 0.01) was used to define the significance among pond and total benthos in SAS software.
