Organic Pollutants in the Tissues of Taki ( Channa Punctatus ) , Shol ( Channa Striatus ) and Gojar ( Channa Marulius ) from a Floodplain of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study has been carried out to determine the bioaccumulation of organic compounds, especially Persistent Organic Pollutants or POP's in three species of Snakeheads (Family: Channidae) viz. Taki ( Channa punctatus), Shol (C. striatus) and Gojar (C. marulius) randomly collected from four sampling sites of the floodplains of Matlab, Chandpur. Gas Chromatograph (GC) with Electron Capture Detector (ECD) and Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) with Electron Impac't Ionization (EI) indicated some spatial pattern to contaminant concentrations in fishes. The result showed that pyridine, chloramphetamine, benzoic acid, acetamide, propionic acid and cyano compounds are common in fishes. Most of these are carcinogen in human and also an indicator of the pollution of aquatic resources of Meghna floodplain basins.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Study area: A survey has been conducted on the floodplain areas of Matlab, Chandpur district. The Matlab upazilla (90°44'E, 23°20'N) is located in Chandpur district by the bank of Meghna river, Bangladesh. Fish samples were collected from four sampling sites of all major tributaries of Matlab , Chandpur, including Meghna Dhonagoda project area floodland which include a crop land (Gazaria), a canal (Keshairkandi). Period of the work was January 2005 to February 2006. Id entification and collection of fish samples: Taki ( Channa punctatus), Shol (C. striatus) and Gojar (C. marulius ) belonging to the family Channidae were identified after Shafi and Quddusm. Fishes were collected by the gears, traps available locally named Veshal jal and Khora jal . The traps were set in the floodplain and fishes were in. Collected fishes were killed instantly and washed in distilled water before storing in ice. The samples were brought to the laboratory with ice and then stored in the refrigerator at - 20°C until further analysis. Extraction of fish samples for pesticid e resid ue analysis: Fish sample was taken from deep freeze and thawed. Muscle tissues were separated from fish, chopped into small pieces and grind to paste thoroughly. A sub sample of ground fish tissues were extracted successively with ethyl acetate. Then the extracted aliquot was filtered through the glass wool plug into a fresh evaporation flask. The extracted solvent was evaporated to about 1 ml by rotary vacuum evaporator at 40°C. Then cyclohexane was mixed with the solvent and was evaporated in a rotavapor until 1 ml. Then that solvent was poured into a fresh graduated test tube. Passing of nitrogen gas into the tube was done to make the sample 1 ml in case when the sample was more than 1ml.
