Effect of Hill Damage on Yield of T.aman Rice in the Tide Prone Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in 1995 and 1996 during T.Aman season in both on-station and on-farm condition. The experimental sites were at the/Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm Sagardi, Barisal and the other in the farmer's field at Bakerganj, Barisal. In both the years a modem variety, BR23 and a popular local cultivar Sadamota were used. The panicle number hill^-1 increased considerably with the increase of hill damage, but the panicle number per unit area decreased significantly and gradually with the increase of hill damage irrespective of variety, location and year. The local cultivar produced higher number of panicles than the modem one in both the locations and years. In 1995, the grain yield of BR23 in the control and 50% hill-damaged plot were 4.21 and 3.45 t ha^-1, respectively at the BRRI farm the corresponding values for Sadamota were 3.66 and 3.49 t ha^-1 . In the farmer's field the corresponding values were 4.02 and 3.92 t ha^-1 for BR23 and 2.59 and 2.08 t ha^-1 for Sadamota . In the following year, the yields were 3.72 and 3.49 t ha^-1 and 2.00 and 2.14 t ha^-1 for BR23 and Sadamota, respectively . In all the cases, it was observed that missing hill treated plots produced comparable yield as was obtained in the control plots .

Objectives:

To find out the effect of hill damage and to determine the extent of such damage that could be compensated by the remaining hills in the field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in 1995 and 1996 during T.Aman season in both on-station and on-farm condition. The experimental sites were at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm Sagardi, Barisal and the other in the farmer's field at Bakerganj, Barisal. In both the years a modem variety, BR23 and a popular local cultivar Sadamota were used. Thirty day-old seedlings were transplanted maintaining 20cm x 20cm spacing for BR23, whereas for Sadamota the seedling age was 45 days and the spacing was 30cm x 25cm. Different levels of hill damage were imposed within fifteen days after transplanting (DAT). The transplanted hills were uprooted randomly with a view to create artificial gap in the field. In the first year the levels of hill damage were 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% for both the sites but in the second year, the figures were 15, 30 and 45%. In each case a undisturbed (no hill missing) treatment was used as control. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications using variety in the main plot and hill damage in the sub plot. The data were statistically analyzed following standard statistical procedure.

Re-transplanting in tidally flooded fields may not be necessary in case of washing away of even a large number of hills by tidal current provided the plants in the remaining hills are not otherwise damaged, due to lengthy tidal.
