Evaluation of Salt Tolerant Genotypes of Boro Rice in South-western Coastal Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three field experiments were conducted in the farmer's fields to evaluate the performance of five genotypes under saline environment. Three advanced breeding lines CBR5333-34-3-6, BR5999-82-3-2-HR10, IR71866-3R- 2-1) and two modern varieties (IR64 and BRRI dhan28) were tested. Soil salinity levels throughout the growing period were 1.6 to 3.39 (low), 3.19 to 6.17 (medium) and 3.35 to 7.33 dS/m (high), respectively. Before transplanting, salinity levels of irrigation water were 1.27, 2.26 and 2.21 dS/m in low, medium and high salinity, respectively. The plant height, tillers/m², filled grain, 1000-grain weight and grain yield were significantly decreased with the increase of salinity level. The genotypic difference in relation to soil salinity response was pronounced. The tallest plant height of BR5333-34 -3-6 at low salinity and which was 108 cm reduced to 99 cm at high salinity. The highest tillers/m² (570) was found in IR64 at the low salinity and the lowest (495) at the medium saline site. The highest filled grain percentage (87) was obtained in BR71866 -3R-2-1 at low salinity, which was reduced to 74% at high salinity. Sterility percentage increased significantly with the increase in salinity level, but variation of sterility in different genotypes was not affected. Sterility ranged from 15 to 23% at low, 21 to 24% at moderate and 25 to 29% at high salinity. BR5999-82-3-2-HR10 showed the heaviest in 1000 grain weight (21.2 g) and (20.5g) as well as the highest grain yield 4.70t/ha and 3.24 t/ha at the sites with low and high salinity levels, respectively. The tested genotype BR5999-82-3-2-HR10 was therefore, found significantly superior among the genotypes in terms of 1000 grain weight, grain yield and growth duration.

Objectives:

to evaluate the performance of three genotypes and two varieties for Boro season against salinity.

Methodology:

Three trials in farmers' field from January to May 2003 were conducted at three different locations, namely Kaliganj, Satkhira Sadar and Shamnagar Upazila of Satkhira district based on their salinity level. The site Kaliganj selected for its low salinity level (2.42 ds/m), Satkhira for medium (3.82 ds/m) and Shamnagar for relatively high salinity (4.11 ds/m). Soil (0-15 cm depth) and surface irrigation water samples were collected at 15 days interval from transplanting to harvest . Irrigation water salinity was measured directly and the collected soil was analyzed for salinity using saturation extract method at Soil Science Laboratory, BRRI, Gazipur. Initial soil samples (0-15 cm depth) were analyzed for pH, organic matter, total N, P, exchangeable K, S, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Cu and Mn following standard laboratory methods. Data for yield components were recorded at maturity. Grain yield was recorded from 5 m² area and the yield was adjusted to 14% moisture. A randomized complete block design with three dispersed replications was used in the study. Each farmer's field was considered as one replication. The line BR5999-82-3-2-HR10 was found superior in terms of 1000-grain weight, grain yield and growth duration among the tested genotypes at low to high soil salinity level ( 1.6 to 7 .33 dS/m) of Satkhira district in the Boro season.
