A field study was conducted to determine the productivity of wheat + chickpea, wheat + lentil and wheat + pea intercropping under three different weeding regimes (no weeding, one hand weeding at 21 DAS and two hand weedings as 21 and 42 DAS). The results showed that wheat yield and yield attributes were not affected when grown in combination with chickpea, lentil and pea except plant height in pea combinations. Rather, the yield was significantly increased in chickpea combinations. The maximum wheat equivalent was also obtained from wheat and chickpea combinations, while the highest land equivalent ratio was obtained from wheat + pea combinations with two weedings. Irrespective of intercropping, no. of grains spikelet-1 and ear-1, yield, wheat grain equivalent and LER values in wheat were significantly greater in weeded treatments than in unweeded ones. However, differences between one weeding and two weedings were minimum. The results suggested that greater productivity of wheat could be achieved by intercropping chickpea and pea with wheat

To determine the performance of wheat + chickpea, wheat + lentil and wheat + pea intercropping under different weeding regimes.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 1994-95 to 1995-96. The soil was silty loam with pH 6.9 and the organic matter content was 1.028%. The varieties used for wheat, chickpea and lentil were Kanchan, Nabin and Uthfala, respectively and a local for pea. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications.  The treatments were as follows: A. Main plot treatments: crops and crop combinations : (i. Wheat as sole crop, ii. Chickpea as sole crop , iii. Lentil as sole crop , iv. Pea as sole crop , v. Wheat + Chickpea, vi. Wheat + Lentil and vii. Wheat + Pea). B. Sub plot treatments: Weeding regime: (i. No weeding, ii. One weeding at 21 days after seeding (DAS) and iii. Two weeding at 21 and 42 DAS). The seeds were sown in rows in November. The seed rates for wheat, chickpea, lentil and pea sole were 130, 40, 30 and 75 kg ha-1, respectively and those for intercrop plots; full seed rate of wheat (100%) and 50% seed rate of chickpea, lentil and pea were used. Spacing between rows for both sale wheat and pulses was 25 cm and pulses were sown in between two rows of wheat in intercropping situation.' Wheat sole and intercrop plots received a uniform application of 100-90-40-20 kg and chickpea, lentil and pea sole plots received 20-60-40-20 kg N, P205, K2O and S ha-I through urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), Muriate of potash (MP) and Gypsum respectively. In sale wheat and intercrop plots one third of urea, all TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied as basal. Remaining two thirds of urea was top dressed in two equal splits at 21 and 42 DAS. But all fertilizers were applied as basal in sale chickpea, lentil and pea crops. The plots were irrigated once at 23 DAS. Weeding was done according to the treatments. Other intercultural operations were done uniformly and insect pests were controlled. At crop maturity, 12 sq. m. area was harvested from both sole and intercrop plots. The grain yield was adjusted at 12% moisture and converted into per hectare yield. Wheat equivalent yield, Relative yields and LER were also calculated.
