Effects of Some Anthelmintics on Body Weight in Cattle in Bangladesh Infested with Trematode and Nematodes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out to determine anthelmintic effects on body weight in cattle infested with fasciola and nematodes. A total of 100 cattle infested with fasciola or nematodes were selected for anthelmintic therapy. 80 infected cattle were treated in four groups taking equal number in each and the other 20 cattle served as control. These cattle were moderate to heavily infected with trematodes or nematodes. In this study the prevalence rate of nematodes and trematodes were 31.77% and 68.23%, respectively. The anthelmintic therapy was given against trematode with Dovenix (Nitroxynil) and Pasinex (Triclabendazole). On the other hand anthelmintic therapy against nematode was given with Deminth (Morante I citrate) and Nemafax (Thiophanate). The body weights were recorded on pre-treatment day and at 60th post-treatment day. The effects of Dovenix and Pasinex against trematode showed a mean increase of 29.89 (19.54%) and 21.24 (11.38%) body weight gain respectively. Whereas the untreated control cattle showed 8.21 increase bodyweight. Similarly, the nematode infected groups treated with Derninth and Nemafax showed a mean increase of 21.22 kg (17.26%) and 28.16 kg (80%) body weight gain, whereas, the untreated control cattle showed 7.61 kg (19.86%) weight gain which is much less compared to Nemafex and Deminth treated group compared to treatment group. The increase of body weight gain in both treatment groups was significant (p<0.05). Thus the study recommended Dovenix against trematode and Nemafax against nematodes for gaining body weight through anthelmintic treatment of cattle.

Objectives:

To treat cattle randomly with anthelmintics with a view to improving the body weight and other productive performance.

Methodology:

This study was conducted during the period of one-year starting from July 2002 to June 2003. Out of 315 cattle examined a total of 50 affected with fascioliasis (trematode) and 50 with nematode were selected. The different groups and the therapeutic dose of different anthelmintics. Faecal samples of individual animals collected directly form the rectum of the cattle in polythene beg. About 10-15 grams of faecal samples. collected from each animals were examined using direct smear method, flotation and sedimentation method (Soulsby, 1986). These were done to find the prevalence of different parasites in cattle in this study. The faecal samples were examined before giving the treatment. The body weight of both the control and treated cattle were recorded at pre-treatment day and 60th post-treatment day.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that prevalence of Fascioliasis was 32.04% and gastro-intestinal nematodes 31.77%. These findings do not differ from findings of researcher in Bangladesh. These findings support the earlier reports of Cornwell et al. (1971) who reported 7.6 to 7.8 kg live weight gain in treated calves. The increase live weight also support findings of Sarker et al. (1996) (p<0.05). The variation in weight gains in this study along with other studies might be due to type, breed and age of animals, duration, frequency, type of anthelmintics used environment level of feeding and husbandry etc. as mentioned by Alam (1997). Under field condition it was not possible to examine the feaces at regular interval after giving treatment as is usually done under farm conditions. For this season the efficacy of the drugs could not be assessed on the basis of reduction of fecal egg output after giving treatment. Here in this study weight gain was selected as a criteria to find out the efficacy of the drugs. Since weight gain is a slow process & can not be expended to reach a satisfactory level within short time after treatment, so the body weight was recorded 60th day after giving treatment.
