Installation of Non-weighing Lysimeters for Evaluation of Agricultural Hydrology

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Basic information on agricultural hydrology is needed to solve the problems in watershed management. Lysimeter is one of the equipment to collect data on agricultural hydrology. With the help of a non-weighing lysimeter, complete data of all the components of water balance equation is possible for one month duration as in a precision weighing lysimeter. A non-weighing gravity type lysimeter system with ten boxes and a common measuring box was designed and constructed at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Experimental Farm, Mymensingh. Lysimeter boxes have brick walls with cement concrete work (CC) in between, in wall and at foundation.These lysimeters were filled with disturbed sandy loam soil throughout the profile. The lysimeter boxes have a soil surface area of 2m² with effective soil depth of 1.05 m which provides sufficient root zone depth for most of the crops. Each lysimeter box has got provisions for run-off and deep percolation measurement, maintaining shallow water table at fixed level but at different depths. Evapotranspiration can be determined from water balance equation by accounting for effective rainfall. irrigation. run-off. storage and deep percolation. Management and operational aspects of lysimetric set up are also discussed..

Objectives:

1. To design and construct ten lysimeter boxes at the Experimental Farm. Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh for quantitative evaluation of different components of water balance equation under Mymensingh conditions.

Methodology:

The site of the lysimeter installation is in the levelled plot of BINA Experimental Farm. Mymensingh. The over-all system consists of ten lysimeter boxes each having a soil surface of 2 m² with effective soil depth of 1.5 m. The lysimeter boxes are separated from the common measuring box (11.0 m x 0.91 m) by soil fill of 0.5 m. Each lysimeter box has got different pipe connections for different purposes. The lysimeter boxes were filled with imported soil. But sufficient care was taken to maintain natural compaction and bulk density.

Achievement/Findings:

The constructed lysimeter can be used for multipurpose studies. It is essential that the surface of the lysimeter should be representative of the surrounding area and lysimeter itself should be indistinguishable from surrounding area. In this installation. lysimeter is constructed in the middle of the experimental farm where all management practices for different crops are followed. Good knowledge of the potential and limitations of these devices with adequate remain is the essential condition for successful operation a acceptable results. In fine. it can concluded that basic information 0 hydrologic cycle on regional basis can obtained from the constructed lysimeter fl better watershed management sustainable water resource utilization. It recommended to construct similar type lysimeter at different agro-ecologtcal zon of Bangladesh to gather similar type information from all over the country f better management of available wat resources to protect environment.
