[14c]-carbofuran Degradation in Four Different Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The degradation of ¹⁴C-carbofuran pesticide in four soils of Mymensingh district was investigated under the laboratory conditions. The carbofuran got bound to the soils immediately after application and a rapid degradation was found in available fractions. The extent of binding and degradation and presence of residues varied with soil properties. After 90 days, the percentage of applied carbofuran in extractable residues in four soils was found to be 0.5, 0.34, 0.48 and 46.99. The half life (DT₅₀) of carbofuran was recorded to be 11.7, 11.8, 10.29 and 123 days, respectively in sandy loam, silty clay loam, clay and silt loam soil. The degradation rate of carbofuran was found to be markedly influenced by soil pH.

Objectives:

To study the degradation rate of¹⁴C-carbofuran and its relation with soil properties

Methodology:

Soil samples were collected from four sites - Char Ishardia, Kanthal Bilbuka , Sumuch boilor (Trisha!) and Shikarikanda in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. The soils were air-dried and sieved to 2 mm. Soil pH was measured in mixture of soil + O.O lM CaCl₂solution (1 + 2)( ⁶) with a glass pH electrode. Particle size distribution was evaluated using hydrometer method(⁷) and the organic matter content (OM) was measured by a colorimetric method using chromic acid.(⁸) The cation exchange capacity (CEC) was determined by using neutral lN NH₄OAc method.(⁹⁾ The field capacity of the soils was determined by the method described by Richard (1965)(¹⁰)The physical and chemical properties determined. Twelve hundred gram of the soil sample was taken in each earthen pot coated with plastic bag in two sets of four pots. To the first set, ¹⁴C-carbofuran pesticide was applied and in the second set no pesticide was applied.
