Effect of Groundwater Level Fluctuation and Water Quality on Crop Producton Environemnt at Trishal Thana, Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Trishal thana under Mymensingh district to evaluate the effect of groundwater level fluctuation and water quality on crop production environment. In the study area during dry season (November to March) groundwater level dropped below the suction lift limit from 1985 to 1993. This depletion of groundwater affected the surface water and for that reason 0.27, 0.97, 0.92, 0.92 and 1.19% of the total cultivated area of rice, wheat, potato, pulses and mustard, respectively were decreased in the study area. The depths of static water levels were significantly negatively correlated with the soil moisture at the different land categories. Simultaneously, the soil moisture was significantly positively correlated with the yield of boro rice. The yield of boro rice under different deep tubewells was significantly different at 5% level of significance. The highest yield (6.02 t/ha) was found at Shakua union and the lowest yield (4.68 t/ha) at Kanahari and Baliapara union.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the effect of groundwater level fluctuation on crop production and groundwater quality at Trishal thana of Mymensingh district.

Methodology:

A study was conducted at Trishal thana of Mymensingh district during May to November 1994 to assess the effect of groundwater level fluctuation on agricultural environment. The monthly data or static water level monitored by Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) in 10 deep tubewells from 1985 to 1993 at representative locations of the study area. There were about 277 hectare of surface water bodies consisting of beels and ponds of varying sizes. The Brahmaputra, the only perennial riverspasses by touching the northeastern boundary of the area. A small river Sutia passess over the area which carries substantial flow during monsoon season but gets dried during winter period. Soil samples were collected during November at 15,30 and 60 cm depth to measure the moisture status at twelve union of the Trishal thana. This study included the three types of topographical land, namely, high, medium and low land with three replications. Moisture content of the field soils were determined by weight basis in the Humboldt Soil Testing Laboratory of the Department of soil science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymcnsingh. Water samples were collected from 10 located DTWs and chemical properties or groundwater were determined from same laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

The total water table dropped below 8 m for 2 to 3 months almost every year for allover the study area. In the dry period 88.64 ha-m surface water depleted within ten years and for that reason the depletion of cultivated area of rice, wheat, potato, pulses and mustard were 0.27, 0.97, 0.92, 0.92 and 1.19% of the total cultivated area. The quality of irrigation water was good on the basis of EC, pH, SAR, SSP, RSBC, PI and TH values. The depths of static water table were significantly correlated with the percentage of soil moisture and the percentage of soil moisture were significantly correlated with the yield of boro rice.
