Effect of Flooding Depth on Yield and Water Requirement of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment revealed that flooding depth did not have significant influence on the yield of rice. From the yield point of view, the flooding depth of 8-10 cm is still tolerated. Though there was no significant influence of the depth of flooding on yield, but the efficiency of water use on yield (kg/ha of yield produced per cm water used) decreased from 20.45 to 8.57 kg/ha/ cm if the depth of flooding increased from irrigation one day after infiltration to 8-10 cm submergence. The rate of water requirement was lowest (129.60 cm) in case of alternate flooding and drying and highest (239.30 cm) for 8-10 cm submergence. Alternate flooding and drying can be used as a tool in terms of water saving to increase the irrigation rate. The increase of irrigation rates were 85 %, 65 % and 35 % for alternate flooding and drying, 3-5 cm irrigation at 0.1 bar suction and 3-5 cm submergence, respectively compared to 8-10 cm submergence. In other words irrigation 1 day after infiltration of the ponded water cut down the average irrigation input by 60 % without loss in yield.

Objectives:

1. A study was conducted on the effect of flooding depth on rice to have an idea for improving design criteria for irrigation rate so that efficient use of irrigation water can be achieved, and 2. Another subsequent benefit is that it is possible to increase net irrigated area in the irrigation scheme that has shortage of and limited available water or to increase net irrigated area in dry season.

Methodology:

The objective of this study is to know the influence of flooding depth on water requirement in connection with water saving. The trial was conducted in one location. The irrigation treatments observed were alternate flooding and drying (1 day after infiltration), 3-5 cm irrigation at 0.1 bar suction, 3-5 cm submergence and 8-10 cm submergence. Each treatment had three replications.

Achievement/Findings:

Alternate flooding and drying technique seems to be the best technique in terms of water saving to increase irrigation rate. Decreasing of flooding depth could also be used as one of the methods for increasing the water use efficiency, so that the irrigation rate in dry season could be higher.
