Effect of Soil Moisture Stress on Lentil (lens Culinaris)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study on the effect of soil moisture stress upto temporary wilting point (9.5% by volume) on the yield of lentil (Lens culinaris) was conducted in the sandy-loam soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University farm. Three water treatments were applied as controlled without stress, stress at early stage and stress at late stage of plant growth, respectively. The effect on grain yield and drymatter yield was significant at P = 0.01. A reduction in grain yield of 33.2 and 52.4% by weight, respectively was obtained in treatments with moisture stress at early and late stage of plant growth. An irrigation upto field capacity (31% by volume) at 30-40 days of sowing can increase the grain yield of lentil.

Objectives:

1. To determine the suitable time of irrigation for lentil and to find out the soil moisture stress effect on grain yield of lentil.

Methodology:

Using wooden planks,a box 2.75 m long, 2.75 m wide and 0.6 m deep was constructed.The box was partitioned with planks into S equal cells of dimensions 0.92 m x 0.92 m each. The box was placed on a level ground and in open atmosphere. The inner surface and bottom of each cell was wrapped with polythelene sheet to prevent leakage of water from or to the box. At the bottom of each cell along their center line, the perforated steel pipes (2.54 cm diameter) under a small slope were placed to drain out excess water. The steel pipes were wrapped with wire net and jute mat. The lower 15.24 cm depth of each cell was filled with coarse sand. Sandy loam soil dried upto field capacity (31% by wt.) was placed on the top of sandy layer. Cowdung, urea, T.S.P., M.P. were applied at the rate of 1,860 kg, 28 kg, 50 kg and 19 kg/acre, respectively. The seeds were placed at a depth of 3.80 cm. The distance between plant to plant and row to row were 22.50 cm and 20.0 cm, respectively. The number of plants per plot were 16. Polythelene sheet was used to prevent leaf irrigation to plots kept under stressed condition from dew at night. The growing period of lentil was divided into early stage from sowing to 60 days of plant growth and late stage from 60 days to harvest of the plant (119 days). Based on these periods, there were three irrigation treatments.
