Effects of Various Combinations of Water Supplies and Nitrogen Rates on Growth and Yield of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The response of a promising selected line of mustard, BINA 59 (Brassica juncea (Linn.) Czern & Coss. subsp. juncea Linn.) to different levels of water supplies and N levels was studied in fields in winter season of 1982-83. Application of N at 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha to BINA 59 resulted in more seed yield than control and was significant at P = 0.01. Irrigation water has pronounced effect on seed yield over control and was significant at P = 0.05. For a higher yield of mustard, water supply after 20-25 days of sowing with N at 80 kg/ha in the vegetative stage was necessary.

Objectives:

1. Aimed to relate yield with water supplies and N-rates so as to rationalize N-rates on the basis of water supply.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with water treatments in main plots and N-rates in sub-plots. There were four water treatments with no pre-sowing irrigation as (i) natural storage (control, I₀) (ii) one irrigation of 6 cm after 20-25 days (V) of seeding (I₁), (iii) two irrigation of 6 cm each after 20-25 days and 45-50 days (F) of seeding (I₂) and (iv) one irrigation of 6 cm after 45-50 days of seeding (I₃). N-rates were 0, 40, 80(V), 80(F) and 120(V + F) kg/ha. Each treatment was replicated thrice. The plot size was 20 m² (5 x 4 m). There was a buffer zone of 50 cm from plot to check seepage from plot to plot. The crop was sown on 26 November 1982. N as urea was applied as per treatments in two equal splits, half at sowing and the other half top-dressed as per irrigation treatments. A basal dose of 90 and 40 kg/ha of P and K, respectively was applied at the time of sowing. The crop was harvested in the second week of March 1983. The measured quantity of irrigation water was applied with the use of spiles placed low in the bank to reduce erosion at the outlet. The flow rate was determined using the equation. The soils of the experimental site were silt loam of Sonatola series with pH, soil depth and total moisture storage capacity ranging from 6.3 to 7.5,75 to 100 cm and 260 to 350 mm, respectively. The single value constants viz. field capacity. wilting point and bulk density ranged from 34 to 35.5% and 1.45 to 1.6 g/ml, respectively. Soil moisture determination from 3 depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-15 cm) of soil profile was done by gravimetric method at sowing, at harvest, before and after each irrigation. The crop received a total rainfall of 21.5 mm during its growing period. Consumptive use or crop water use (ET_cr) was calculated by the water balance method.
