Wet Seeding of Boro Rice: an Agronomic Means for Increasing Yield and Decreasing Production Cost

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The agronomic and economic advantages of wet seeding as an alternative to the transplanting method of rice cultivation was evaluated with BRI4 and BRRI dhan28 in the Boro season, respectively, in 1993 and 1994. Data have proved the superiority of wet seeding than the traditional transplanting in terms of grain yield and net return. Wet seeding of BR 14 saved 16-18 days over transplanting on the day of seeding and 40 days after seeding, respectively. In case of BRRI dhan28 the corresponding figures were 9 and II days, respectively.

Objectives:

To compare the agronomic productivity and economic profitability of the wet-seeded and transplanted methods of rice culture grown under irrigated conditions in the Boro season.

Methodology:

Field experiments were conducted in 1993 and 1994 in the Boro season at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute- (BRRI), Gazipur. Two modem Boro rice varieties, BR14 and BRRI dhan28, were grown in 1993 and 1994, respectively. The Boro rice establishment techniques employed in the experiments were : (i) wet seeding (sowing of sprouted seeds into the puddled field) in line (WS), (ii) transplanting of 40-day-old seedlings into the puddled field on the day of WS (TP 1), and (iii) transplanting of seedlings 40 days after the day of WS (TP2). The crops were fertilized at the rate of 80, 60 40, 15 and 4 kg N, P₂0₅' K₂0, Sand Zn/ha, respectively. All the fertilizers except N were applied basally at the final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three equal splits at 15 days after WS and transplanting, at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages. Before WS method, the field was well levelled and excess water from the different patches of the field was removed. Weeding was done at 20 and 40 days after WS and transplanting. The crop was maintained with 3-5 cm water up to dough stage. For wet seeding, 50 kg seeds per hectare were sown continuously in line maintaining a line to line distance of 20 cm. Transplanting was done with 2 to 3 seedlings per hill at 20- x 20-cm spacing. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 6- x 5-m. The crop was harvested at physiological maturity. Grain yield and yield component data were recorded from a 5 m' sampling area from each plot. Yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content. The collected data were statistically analyzed using standard statistical procedures. Economic profitability of each rice establishment technique was assessed by partial budget analysis. It considered only those costs and return which were altered as a result of change of establishment techniques.

Achievement/Findings:

WS method produced significantly the highest grain yield (4.40 t/ha). This was followed by TPI (3.95 t/ha) and then TP2 (3.34 t/ha). In WS method, the main field duration was longer but life cycle was shorter than those in TP1 and TP2 methods. Two years' results indicated that the wet seeding method of rice culture in the Boro season could produce higher rice yield and give higher economic return than TPI and TP2 methods. Thus this study suggests that wet seeding method of Boro rice culture may be an agroeconomically feasible and economically profitable alternative option to that of conventional labour intensive and costly practice of transplanting method.
