Now a day’s polythene bags are widely used all over Bangladesh for the production of seedlings. But it is a fact that this type of container is detrimental to environment. Therefore, an attempt on scientific investigation has taken to select environment friendly container other than polythene bag for quality seedlings production in the nursery. In July, 2003 seedlings of Hybrid acacia (Acacia auriculifomis x A. mangium)  were raised at 13 different types of containers.  Highest survival (99%) and height growth (27cm) at the age  of two (2) months were recorded in polyester cloth bags followed by poly bag (98% ) survival and (26cm) height. 1n 2004, Phyllanthus embelica, Chuckrassia velutina, Artocarpus chama,Bauhinia verigeta, Albizia procera, Terminalia arjuna, Samanea saman and Gmelina arborea were also raised at three best grown container (poly bag, black polyester cloth bag and bamboo basket). The poly bag  showed  good in respect to survival  and height growth of seedling in nursery at the age of 4 months. In July/2006, Albizzia procera,  A.lebbck, A. rechardiana Gmelina arborea, A. lucida, Cassia fistula, Samanea saman,  Hybrid acacia (Acacia auriculifomis x A. mangium), Terminalia  arjuna   and were raised at treated jute bag (treated with copper sulfate and sodium carbonate) and poly bag. Severe mortality of seedlings was found particularly in  Cassia fistula and  Phyllanthus embelica. 80% Jute bag found rotted within four months.

1.To find out suitable nursery techniques for quality seedling production in the nursery.

2.To select environment friendly containers for raising quality seedlings in the nursery.

This study was conducted at Headquarter nursery of Silviculture research division, Bangladesh Forest Research Institute.  Different sizes thirteen types of containers (Black Polyester cloth bag white Polyester cloth bag, Bamboo basket, Jute bag (untreated), Polythene bag, Jute bag (treated with tar), Plastic bag, PVC pipe, Bamboo internodes section, Markin cloth bag (treat with gab latex), Plastic glass, Earthen pot  and Patipatha cane basket), were used for raising seedling. First time, seedling of  Hybrid acacia (Acacia auriculifomis x A. mangium)  species were raised in above mention twelve types of container. Then seedlings of following eight types of species Viz. Phyllanthus embelica, Chuckrassia velutina, Artocarpus chama, Bauhinia verigeta, Albizia procera, , Samanea saman and Gmelina arborea, seedlings  were raised in best three types of container polyester cloth bag, polybag and bamboo basket. Thirdly, In July/2006, Albizzia procera,  A.lebbck, A. rechardiana, A. lucida, Cassia fistula, Samanea saman,  Hybrid acacia (Acacia auriculifomis x A. mangium) and Terminalia arjuna hybrid acacia, Phylanthus embelika were raised at treated jute bag (treated with copper sulfate and sodium carbonate) and poly bag.Experimental Design was Completely Randomized Block Design( RCBD) with five replications. Data recorded on seed germination%, Survival %, Height & Collar diameter. Seedlings in the nursery were maintained through regular watering and weeding, and shorting etc.

Observations on 13 different types of containers and rot proof  treated jute bag (treated with copper sulfate and sodium carbonate) showed that treated jute bag was not suitable  for the production of quality seedlings of most forest species in the nursery. No germination of hybrid Acacia seeds and no survival of pricked out seedlings in CCB treated bamboo pots and tar treated jute bag were found. Both treated and untreated jute bags were degraded at the age of 30 -35 days. 80% rot proof treated jute bag found to rotten within four months. Though the polyester cloth bag were found good in respect to survival  and height growth of seedling in nursery it shows some limitations, such as it is not biodegradable and soil in the bag did not remained compact. As a consequence, seedlings in the loosen soil begun to wilted during dispatch from the nursery. Data recorded on germination and growth in poly bag  showed good  performance  and was more economic in comparison with the other containers. It may be recommended that poly bag is the most suitable container for raising seedling in the nursery considering its cost, availability germination % and  survival % and easy to carry the seedlings to the planting sites. However, poly bag has disposal problem.  Due to above important advantages proper recycling of poly bag or biodegradable poly bag may be helpful to resolve the environmental issues and alternative to polythene bag for large scale seedlings production.
