Combining Ability for Seed Yield and Related Characters in Dry Bean (phaseolus Vulgaris L)under Two Cultural Environments

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a 7 x 7 F₂ diallel experiment on dry bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L), combining ability was studied during 1998 - '99 under two cultural environments. Significant mean square for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were observed for nearly all the characters examined. GCA mean square was much higher than specific combining ability (SCA) mean square for all the characters in both environments except for seed yield/plant in Env. 2, thus the characters under reference seemed to be governed by additive gene action. For seed yield/plant the character expression appeared to be governed by non additive gene action. GCA effects showed parent PB 154 was the best general combiner for days to maturity in both environments and PB 155 the best general combiner for seed yield/plant in Env. 2. SCA effects revealed that PB 146 x PB 154 and PB 152 x PB 155 were the best specific crosses for seed yield/plant in both environments.

Objectives:

The present investigation has been undertaken to know the type of gene action governing yield and yield related traits and to identify the parents and crosses which could be exploited for the use in future breeding programme.

Methodology:

The experimental material comprised 7 x 7 F₂ diallel population without reciprocals of dry bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L) grown in randomized complete block design with three replicates under two cultural environments during rabi season of 1998 - '99. Each treatment was sown in a single row plot of 8.4 m x 4 m with inter- and intra row spacing of 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Observations were recorded on ten random plants for ten plant characters. The combining ability analysis was done according to Method 2 Model II of Griffing (1956), also quoted in several reference texts (Singh 1973, 1979; Singh and Chaudhary, 1996 and Dabholkar, 1992).

Achievement/Findings:

The highest SCA effect was obtained in the cross PB 152 x PB 155 in both environments which was consistent with high mean value (7.17g). This cross represented a combination of poor x poor general combiners in Env. 1 and poor x good general combiners in Env. 2 for this character. In Env. 1, crosses PB 146 x PB154 and PB 152 x PB 155 registered significant positive SCA effect; and on the contrary PB 82 x PB 152 and PB 125 x PB 146 had significant negative SCA effect. In Env. 2, crosses PB 82 x PB 135, PB 146 x PB 154, PB 152 x PB 155 and PB 154 x PB 155 displayed significant positive SCA effect and PB 82 x PB 135, PB 146 x PB 155 significant negative SCA effect.
