Irrigation Scheduling to Wheat in the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain Soil Using Open Pan Ev Aporation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two field experiments on wheat were conducted in the Old Brahmaputra flood plain soil during the winter season of 1985-86 and 1986-87 with different irrigation treatments. The experiments were performed to study the irrigation response to wheat cultivation in this area and to make an irrigation schedule for achieving optimum yield of wheat under judicious use of irrigation water. In 1985-86, the yield and yield components of wheat showed significant response to irrigation at 5 % level where the crop received a total rainfall of 1.30 cm during its growing period. The highest yield of 3.57 t/ha (about 51 % over control) was obtained in irrigation treatment 14 (IW/CPE = 0.8) with 4 irrigation (total 16.0 cm irrigation water). In 1986-87, the yield and yield components of wheat did not show any significant response to irrigation while the crop received a total rainfall of about 4.27 cm and the highest yield of 3.01 t/ha was obtained in control.

Objectives:

1. To investigate the necessity of irrigation for wheat cultivation in the Old Brahmaputra flood plain soil, and 2. To suggest the method of irrigation water application in this area to get the optimum yield of wheat with economic use of irrigation water.

Methodology:

The experiments were laid out in randomized block design with 3 replications having 5 m x 3 m plot size. The irrigation treatments were of control (no irrigation) and different IW/CPE ratio where IW = Irrigation water to a fixed depth up to full saturation of soil, CPE = Cumulative pan evaporation from USWB class-A Open pan minus rain since previous irrigation. The soil consists of 55.97 % sand, 23.79 % silt and 20.42 % clay. The total N (%) of the soil is 0.067, available P (ppm), K ( %) are 38.5 and 0.107, respectively, having a pH value of 7.0. The experimental plots were fertilized uniformly with a basal dose of 80 kg N/ha, 100 kg K₂0/ ha, 10 kg Zn/ha and 30 kg S/ha. Another 80 kg N/ha was applied in two equal splits as top dressing at active vegetated;ve and at flowering stage, irrigation was made by bucket system of known volume. A buffer zone of 1.0 m was maintained between two replications and 0.75 m between irrigation treatments in each replication. Soil moisture in the experimental plots were measured gravimetrically at sowing, harvest, before and after each irrigation. Crop water use or evapotranspiration was determined from water balance equation.

It appears that for the successful growth and yield of wheat in the Old Brahmaputra flood plain area, one irrigation is essential if the total rainfall during the growing period is less than 4.50 cm.
