Response of Sugarcane Varletles to Different Levels of Irrigation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the irrigation response by sugarcane varieties (lSD 16, ISP 20 and ISD 21) was conducted with six irrigation levels. The different irrigation levels gave significantly higher cane yields as compared with no irrigation. The first irrigation (10 cm) applied at 30 DAT with subsequent irrigation applied at 100 mm open pan evaporation (IW/CPE=1.0 where IW - Irrigation water, CPE- cumulative pan evaporation) which produced a cane yield of 171.8 t/ ha, was significantly superior to all the other irrigation levels. The same treatment produced the maximum weight/cane. plant height and number of internodes. The sugarcane varieties did not show a significant difference in the cane yield and other parameters due to different irrigation levels. The increase in cane yield obtained due to the higher irrigation frequencies was 168. 131, 96. 44 and 38 per cent, respectively. as compared to treatment without irrigation.

Objectives:

1. To determine the water requirement and the assessing of the crop water use and other water balance components and the scheduling of irrigation for achieving a higher productivity in sugarcane and for good water management.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute, Ishurdi, Pabna, during November, 1992 to November. 1993. The soil was loamy silt with 7.6 pH. The treatments comprising six irrigation levels as the main plots and three varieties (ISO 16, ISO 20 and ISO 21) as the sub-plots were tested in a split plot design. Each irrigation level received 10 cm irrigation water immediately after seedling transplantation for crop establishment. Seedlings were transplanted in lines 150 cm apart with 45 cm plant to plant distance. The individual plot size was 8 m X 8 m and 150 cm wide buffer zone was maintained between the replicates. There were three replications of each treatment. At final land preparation, each plot was fertilized uniformly with a basal dose of 125 kg N/ha as urea, 125 kg P₂O₅/ha as triple super phosphate and 11 0 kg K₂O/ha as muriate of potash. Another 80 kg N/ha as urea was applied in two equal splits; one at 154 DAT and the other at 175 DAT. The changes in the soil water content were monitored during the growing period using neutron moisture meter. These data were used to compute the soil water storage and the soil water depletion. The seasonal total evapotranspiration (ET) was used as an index of the water use. ET was calculated from the water balance equation.

Achievement/Findings:

The stress condition reduced the cane yield and caused lower water use efficiency. The higher irrigation frequency increased the yield and caused higher water use efficiency. The water requirement of the cane was found to be 144.91, 155.43, 156.97, 167.28, 176.17 and 186.82 cm, respectively, for the different irrigation levels.
