Stability of Grain Yield and Some Other Parameters in Salt Tolerant Genotypes of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three salt tolerant genotypes of rice along with a check variety BR23 were evaluated for their stability at four salt affected coastal locations during T. Aman season, 1998. The trial was set up in RCB design with three replications in each location. There was no significant genotype X environment interaction with respect to grain yield, growth duration and number of panicles per hill. The genotype BR5828-11-1-4 gave the highest average yield of 4.05 t/ha, which was similar to that of BR5331-93-2-8-3 but about 15% higher than BR1l92-2B-35 and BR23. BR5331-93-2-8-3 and BR5828-11- 1-4 had also shorter growth duration of 146 and 148 days and higher 1000-grain weight (about 30g). Estimated stability parameters bi (1.0) and S²di (0) indicated that the genotypes were stable over the environments for their grain yield, growth duration and number of panicles per hill.

Objectives:

To find out genotype (G) X environment (E) interaction effect on stability of yield and some yield related parameters in four salt tolerant genotypes of rice.

Methodology:

Three salt tolerant genotypes of rice: BR1l92-2B-35, 'BR5331-93-2-8-3 and BR5828-11-1-4 (Haque et al, 1999) along with the check variety BR23 were grown in four coastal environments (Sonagazi of Feni, Charbata and Charmajid of Noakhali, Benerpota of Satkhira). These genotypes have been developed through hybridization with salt tolerant parental materials. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications of the genotypes in each environment. The plot size was 5m x 4m and plant spacing was 20 cm x 15 cm. Thirty five to forty day old seedlings were transplanted on 15 - 20 July, 1998. Standard crop production practices were followed. Soil salinity was measured in all the environments except in Shatkhira six times throughout the season using an EC meter (model EKJKELKAMP 18.38). Data were recorded on grain yield, growth duration, plant height, number of grains per panicle and l000-grain weight. For measuring grain yield, 3m x 2m area was harvested from each plot, and grain weight was adjusted to 14% moisture content. Number of panicles per hill was counted form 10 randomly selected hills in each plot. Treatment means were compared by using DMRT. Stability analysis was performed on only grain yield, growth duration and number of panicles per hill following Everheart and Russel (1966).

Achievement/Findings:

All the rice genotypes showed yield stability under different environmental conditions of the coastal area. Moreover, BR5828-11-1-4 and BR5331- 93-2-8-3 were superior in performance and therefore, could be recommended as variety for salt affected coastal regions of Bangladesh.
