Path Coefficient Analysis and Character Association in French Bean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic parameters, correlation coefficient and path coefficients in 17 French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes for ten seed yield related traits showed that phenotypic coefficients of variation (PCV) were higher than genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV) for all the traits. This indicated that the genotype as well as the environmental conditions have significant influence on the inheritance of these traits. Maximum GCV and PCV were found for seeds per plant followed by pods per plant and seed yield per plant. High heritability estimates were found for days to 50% flowering followed by pod length and days to maturity. Moderate genetic advance (GA) and high GA (% of mean) were observed for days to 50% flowering followed by pods per plant and seed yield per plant indicating selection based on these traits would give better response . Seed yield per plant showed significant and positive genotypic (r_g) and phenotypic (r_p) correlation with pods per plant, plant height, pod yield per plant, seeds per pod and seeds per plant. Path coefficient analysis showed that seeds per plant had highest positive direct effect on seed yield per plant followed by 100 seed weight, seeds per pod and days to 50% flowering. The highest negative direct effect was contributed by pods per plant but pods per plant showed the highest indirect effect via seeds per plant and also showed significant and positive correlation with seed yield per plant. Seeds per plant had the highest direct effect on seed yield per plant, hence maximum weightage should be given on this trait during selection .

Objectives:

The present research work aims at studying the extent of genetic variability, nature and causes of relationship of yield and yield related components in French bean .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BSMRAU, Gazipur during rabi season 2002 - 2003 . Seventeen diverse French bean genotypes available at the Department of Genetics and Plant breeding, BSMRAU were used in this investigation. The accession number of the genotypes were: PB 11, PB 13, PB 43, PB 65, PB 82, PB 86, PB 88, PB 106, PB 124, PB 125, PB 129, PB 134, PB 135, PB 139, PB 142, PB 146, PB 147 and BARI released bush bean variety BARI bush bean- 1. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with two replications. Ten randomly selected plants from each plot were used for recording observations on the characters, such as days to 50% flowering (DF), pods per plant (PP), pod length (PL), plant height (PH), days to maturity (DM), pod yield per plant (PYP), seeds per pod (SP), seeds per plant (SPL), 100 seed weight (SW) and seed yield per plant (SYP). GCV and PCV coefficient of variation were calculated according Burton ( 1952). Heritability in broad sense (h²b), GA and GA % were calculated as proposed by Johnson et al. (l955). r_g and r_p correlations were obtained using the formula suggested by Hanson et al. (1956). Path coefficient analysis was done following the method out lined by Deway and Lu (l959).

Achievement/Findings:

Path analysis indicated that seeds per plant were the most important character, which had maximum contribution to seed yield per plant as it exhibited highest direct effect on yield. The second most important character was 100 seed weight followed by seeds per pod, days to 50% flowering and plant height. Seeds per pod showed the highest indirect effect via seeds per plant on yield. The highest negative direct effect on seed yield was showed by pods per plant (-1.637) followed by days to maturity (-0.198), pod yield per plant (-0.186) and pod length (-0.108) but pods per plant, days to maturity and pod yield per plant showed the significant and positive genotypic correlation with seed yield per plant. It might be due to very high positive indirect effect via seeds per plant along with days to 50% flowering, plant height and seeds per pod.
