The experiment was conducted at the CRS, Jaintapur, Sylhet during 2011-2012 with 9 popular and BARI Released mango varieties. A wide variation was observed in case of growth and fruit characteristics. Highest plant height was observed in Mollica (363.3 cm) followed by Lata Bombay (359.7 cm). On the other hand BARI Aam 2 showed highest plant height (358.3 cm) among the BARI released mango varieties. Base girths and spreading were also highest in BARI Aam 2. Number of fruits/plant was found the highest (88.3) in BARI Aam 3 followed by Mollica (83.0), while the lowest (3.3) in Lata Bombay. BARI Aam 2 was superior with highest yield (7.75 kg/plant) followed by Mollica (7.63 kg/plant) and BARI Aam 3 (7.50 kg/plant). The heaviest fruit (250 g) was also found in BARI Aam 2 while the lightest fruit (173 g) in BARI Aam 3. BARI Aam 3 was found superior in terms of TSS (19%) but BARI Aam 2 in highest edible portion (75%). Pre-harvest fruit creaking (40%) were found the highest in Mollica and BARI Aam 3, while that of the lowest in BARI Aam 2.

  1. To study the yield and quality of selected mango varieties under North Eastern region of Bangladesh.
  2. To study the adaptability as well as varietal stability at Sylhet region.

The experiment was conducted at Citrus Research Station (CRS), Jaintapur, Sylhet during 2010-2011. Three BARI released and six popular mango varieties namely Bari Aam 1, Bari Aam 2, Bari Aam 3 , Mollica, Langra, Gopalbhog, Mohonbhog, Mou lata and Lata Bombay were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replication. One year old vineer grafts were planted in the field at July 2006 with a spacing of 8 × 8 m. A single tree of each germplasm constituted the unit of replication. The trees were fertilized with 15 kg rotten cowdung, 250 g Urea, 250 g TSP, 100 g MoP, 100 g Gypsum and 10 g Zinc sulphate in two split of doses at the end of April and September with light irrigation. Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml and Dithane M- 45 @ 2 gm per liter of water was sprayed with the help of a power sprayer, at panicle and pea stage of fruits to control mango hoppers and anthracnose. Inter cultural operations such as weeding, ploughing and irrigation were done as and necessary. Data on plant height, canopy of the tree, flowering and harvesting, fruit weight, number of fruits per tree, TSS, edible portion, fruit size, stone size, and stone weight were recorded. Girth of the trunk was measured at a height of 15 cm from ground level. All the data were recorded following mango descriptor recommended by IBPGR (1989) and analyzed following appropriate design of experiment adopting a statistical programme MSTAT-C. All the treatment means were separated by DMRT at 1% and 5% level of significance.

Maximum number of fruits per plant was recorded from BARI Aam-3 but highest yield was found from BARI Aam 2.  Pre-harvest fruit creaking were found the highest in Mollica and BARI Aam 3, while that of the lowest in BARI Aam 2. Therefore, BARI Aam 2 can be recommended for high rainfall area of north east hilly region.
